Prompt #17
8 October 2013
Going deeper

In the tables below I've listed, in random order, all the people who had posted findings to the forum by the time I assembled and printed them. Each group of four will need to get together at a table, and will get a set of twelve printouts of responses on the forum -- none of which, with luck, will be their own. If your name isn't here, you should, after we've formed the groups, go and do the assignment from last time (there's no point in participating in evaluating results if you haven't participated in the process of producing them).

Your job will be to assess the twelve short reports in front of you with respect to two questions:
  1. To what extent does the report actually say what it found, as opposed to simply saying there's something there to be found?
  2. To what extent does the report tell you what the document was that it found -- that is, who wrote it, where it was published, what its title and date were (as opposed to telling you how to find it on Wikipedia or in Google)?
You'll notice that I'm not asking you to rate the interestingness or value of the findings; that will come later. As you work, you might, on the back of the reports, ask some questions that might help the writer improve her report (making it fuller, answering those questions better, explaining things that aren't clear). Decide together on the three you think most informative and clear, and list them on the form I'll distribute.

When you're done, turn in your form and the printouts you worked with so that we can get them back to their authors.

There will be an assignment for Thursday in the prompt that will be posted after class; it will involve going back and elaborating on the report you've posted.
