Prompt #23
17 October 2013
Rehearsing the Audience

(Re)considering questions

In order to participate in today's class, you should have done two things: posted an inkshed on your reading of the play on the forum, and have in hand three new questions arising from your reading of the play. If you haven't done those things, you should go and read the assigned section of the play (at least) and post an inkshed.

Here are eight categories into which I can divide most of the questions put on the board last time:
A. Can be answered by reading the play
B. Requires background information about the fictional characters and world to answer
C. Can be answered by seeing the production
D. Depends on the individual who answers: answers will vary
E. Could be answered by consulting experts (scholars and critics who've written about the play)
F. We can't actually tell what's being asked
G. Can probably be answered by doing research
H. Does not fit any of the above categories
I'm going to set up some new groups and make sure that every group has the questions brought in by another group. Make sure your name is on the page with your own questions before we exchange.

Your job is to assign all the questions to one of these categories, by putting a large, clear letter at the left-hand margin by each question. You may (actually, should) have some difficulty deciding on categories for many questions; discuss them and arrive at a consensus.

When they're all categorized, I'll ask groups in turn to identify questions they put into a couple of these categories; when we're all done I'll collect all the questions.

Some excerpts from inksheds

I've copied the sections of inksheds that were clearly marked as of interest last time (there were cases where I couldn't tell whether something was marked; I haven't included them). They're online, here; I'll put them on the screen and ask for any member or members of the group who chose them last time to tell us why they thought we might find them worth considering, and perhaps discussing.

Ready to see Private Lives

I'll have copies of the next prompt, which will tell you how we're going to share our experiences of the production.
