assignments:

Q1. 1.15. Finish the quote "Counting only gets you so far, and then you have to _____ "
Answers: 'think'..."make sense of the info; interpret, and understand your participants on a deeper level; interpret and understand what the data means; get emotions and interpretations with mixed methods; use preexisting knowledge to continue a journey; dig into different layers of meaning; experience a situation firsthand; investigate real life circumstances; understand behaviours and see why they occur; ask meaningful questions."
Q2. 1.22. With regard to the 'Humans posts', which is your favourite and why?
Answers:     "The tophat man had a unique perspective, and it was as simple as being kind. The theme was joyful. It put me in a better mood just reading it." "Just because someone is negative toward you does not mean you have to take in the negativity." "It's easy to fall into the trap of frustration and matching peoples' energy if they're rude to you, but it's better to be nice back and spread love." "No one knows what kind of life the other had ... [and] he does not let negativity affect himself and gives others opportunity for growth."     "The story about the actor, because it really captures the essence of 'what am I doing with my life, which is very relatable at this point in my life. It showed he isn't where he wanted to be, and is now questioning his devotion to his passion. It just felt very human and very real!"    "The story about the man with the kid was honest and it showed growth. It shows loyalty, commitment, love, and more." "I can see the loyalty coming through the words he shared, family is very important and shouldn't be taken for granted." "You can see how he fought to be a stable father, something he never had growing up."
Q3. 1.26. In the domestic abuse narratives presentation, which is your favourite sculpture and why? Answers: force of nature IIII; wire faeries II; bird carrying man I
Q4. 1.29. For Wed, read the article and comment on the ethics, RCMP tracked 89 indigenous activists considered 'threats' for participating in protests | National Post
Q5. 2.05. What is the advantage of this approach? (rolling thematic analysis)
Answers: It ensures you cover all the material; the understanding evolves as the layers are peeled back; it is a subjective approach that stays close to the facts but without emotions (?); it is flexible; there is no hypothesis beforehand (its inductive); it looks at discourse; it looks at 'things', *and their surroundings; it allows more interpretations; nothing gets missed as you go through more cycles.
Q6. 2.09. Please watch the video: "The danger of a single story, Chimamanda," 20mins, and use it to develop a method... www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9Ihs241zeg
Q7. 2.14. What was surprising, interesting about the 'women in policing' research. Excuseable but not makeupable.
Q8. 2.16: Which was your favourite photo-voice story/picture, and why? Excuseable but not makeupable.
Answers: Picking a favourite is impossible, as I see men who have fallen on hard times and wouldn't be able to comprehend the hardships they were going to face later in life; I picked Scott because he had one day of bad luck and now can't find a job; I picked Paul, because he looks like normal people, and doesn't fit the stereotype... you can't go around judging; Paul was a working guy who fell into depression and without resources he lost everything... we need to do better and stop failing everyone and to help people not fade away; Paul should have received more help, but because he doesn't look like the stereotype does that mean we're less likely to help?; the details of Scott and Paul's stories were eye-opening, to hear how easy it is for them to lose their housing because of a situation that is out of their control... people were given housing during the pandemic, but does that mean we provide shelter only during a global health emergency?; Scott had a job and a room but after it was shut down he had no place to stay... it shows how fast things can change.
Q9. 2.23: In lieu of class, please send me a short description of what 'subliminal advertising' is, with an example.
Q10. 3.20: How is the graffiti evidence of a subculture? Excuseable but not makeupable.
Q11. 3.22: What is your favourite graffiti pic and why? Excuseable but not makeupable.

proposals:

sites -- 5 pages including titlepage, refspage, and subtitles; looking at supervised injection sites, and the public reaction to them; the purpose of the sites is explained, and how they can reduce harm to the user and the community; 'nimbyism' is proposed as the negative reaction to the sites -- the 2 videos in the opening paragraph should be summarized, and there should be an overall conclusion; what will the source of information be, media? overall, good topic, and shows a lot of work, needs more explicit mention of method. A-16 project: extension; 9 slides, sometimes too much text on slides, eg. #2; there is a lot of information in the notes, representing some of the issues involved in SIS; good use of discourse to illustrate opposition; material could perhaps be spread out over more slides to make for better readability; overall, excellent, shows a lot of work. A+27

reintegration -- 4 pages, including titlepage, 2 refs, subtitles; the idea of looking at released offenders' experiences of attempting to reintegrate is a good one, however such interviews have probably already been done, and can be summarized from the literature, otherwise there is a lot to do to ensure confidentiality, etc; the writing is a bit elusive, eg. 'transpire', but overall the issue is explained well, it just needs a different methodology. B+15.5 project: extension; 11 dspaced pages including titlepage, 2 refspages, no subtitles; the essay begins with a lot of US correctional statistics, where using Canadian stats would make it more relevant to the Canadian context; using subtitles would help organize the essay more thematically, eg. housing, employment, health issues, etc; this reads more like a corrections text, not one about methodology, and it could use some personal illustrations to make it more ethnography-like; overall, needs to align more with the course topic. F14 redo: 10 dspaced pages including titlepage and refspage; there is Canadian information on incarceration, and subtitles to make the themes stand out more; the discussion of reintegration is still very correctionalist oriented, but there is some insight into the personal challenges facing released inmates achieved using interviews, etc; looking at some programs and policies which exist to assist reintegration, along with ex-inmates personal feedback would round out the project; overall, a good topic, and illustrates some of the challenges of research. B+23

trauma -- late; 4 pages, including titlepage, subtitles, and 2 refs; the link between (types of) childhood trauma and negative adult experiences is explained well, and raises the question of how that relationship will be 'measured'; more on how this will be studied, perhaps through a 'meta'-review of the research literature?; overall, good topic, needs more explicit mention of method. B15 project: late with no extension 4.23; 22 slides with no text in the notes and all on the slides, which makes for busy slides, and a short essay component; this is all about trauma, and little about method; overall, does not fit the course, but could with more mention of how research was done. D16 redo: 4.27. 20 slides with drawings, graphs, and minimal text; essay is in the notes; the finding of a strong relationship between adverse childhood events and reoffending, and in a prison sentence and reoffending is good; the slides could be redesigned to be more creative, but the overall message is clear. B+23/30

quints -- 4 pages with subtitles, mixed refs, and photos; the issue is how the quints were treated, as commodities; in addition, storytelling as a way to get stories will be examined as a 'method' which is constructed and crystallized through the passing of life events; pictures might be an important part of this storytelling; overall, this is an interesting topic, and demonstrates both politics and ethics as issues; excellent beginning. A17 project: 10 slides with text in the notes; the focus on ethics in the 'event' and ethics in the 'research' is interesting, especially since a found narrative can illustrate both the highs and lows of the experiment; the overall focus is good, and the narrative angle and its significance could be expanded more A25

domestic -- 3 sspaced pages with subtitles, pictures, and extensive refs; the topic of interpersonal violence is relatively recent, but in a short time many services have developed to assist them; interviews with 'clients' would clarify the use and availability of those resources, however interviews have probably already been done and can be summarized from the literature; overall, this shows a lot of work, and could clarify the use of method; in addition, perhaps there is a storytelling angle. B+15.5 project: extension; 18 slides including titlepage, 2 refspages; the slides have lots of personal quotations to illustrate the various issues and steps in the process of coming to deal with the abuse; the length seems a bit short for the essay component, and could be developed more; overall, well designed, good use of photos and especially quotations. A-24

res-school -- 4 pages including subtitles, photos, and mixed refs; the residential school system was extensive, and so was the harm that was caused; looking at media interviews with 'survivors' will show how their private experiences have become a public issue, particularly when it comes to inter-generational trauma; overall, well-written, and could include a sample of a survivor's story, as 'storytelling' will be an important feature of the re-collection of these experiences; excellent beginning. A17 project: text 6 pages including refs and titlepage, a bit short for the text writeup, and then put on the slides, which makes them a bit crowded; having the first-person accounts of what life was like at the schools is really illuminating; overall, this is a very important topic, and the slides are well-designed, and the text is well-organized; excellent work. A26

rvwade -- 3 sspaced pages, including titlepage, subtitles, photos, and mixed media refs; the overturning of r. v. wade was catastrophic for women's rights and planned parenthood; more on a method from which to centre the controversy would help strengthen the analysis, maybe look at protests?; overall, important issue, needs more explicit mention of a method. A-16 project: 10 slides, including titlepage and refspage; mixed refs, mostly media, none academic; notes on 7, not equivalent to an essay; pictures of protests good, needs to spell out more explicitly what the method is; overall, the essay component is short, and needs to spell out more how protests are an indicator of public mood, etc., especially since this has been such an important transformation in society. C-18 redo 5.08: 13 slides including titleslide and refsslide; pictures, and minimal text on slides; protests clearly the topic, both in the US (historical and current), and in Canada (historical), and it is apparent that they affected legislation (or at least tried to); the discussion of using protests as a method is good, especially with the Sierra Leone example, and the inclusion of the Caravan, and could still be expanded; excellent work A-24

homeless -- with 3403; 4 sspaced pages including titlepage, extensive refspage, and 2 pages text with subtitles and pictures; looking at how the media portrays homelessness over time is a good topic, and a 'snowball' sample of articles should provide lots of attitudes, however interviews add a lot of unnecessary work, as those interviews have probably already been done and can be retrieved from news articles and academic analyses; overall, good topic, including samples of 'homeless' talk would add to the analysis. A-16 project: extension; with 3403; 11 slides including titlepage, refspage, text in the notes, too much text on the slides; good on the importance of a qualitative approach, especially interviews; could be longer for two courses, and the discourse section could be expanded as well; overall, excellent work. A-24

lewishine -- 2 sspaced pages with subtitles, pictures, plus mixed refs; looking at the work of lewis hine and how he documented working conditions is a strong approach to the topic; the summary of his work and its effect is well-done, more on the method of 'photo-interpretation' would help strengthen the analysis; overall, excellent beginning. A17 project: extension; 13 slides including titlepage, and two refs pages; the essay component is short, and the photo-interpretation method could be developed more, especially since the documentation of the workplace was so extensive, and his pictures so persuasive; overall, good topic, good method to describe his work, should develop essay more. B-21/30

lgbt+ -- 5 pages, including titlepage, subtitles, pictures, and mixed refspage; an intersectional approach lays the groundwork, and (media?, academic?) interviews will supply the detail; overall, well organized, researched, and doable, excellent beginning. A17 project: extension; 14 pg document including titlepage, and 2 refs pages; good discussion in the text of intersectionality, experience, legal reform, etc; the method of discourse analysis is excellent and brings out the feelings of the subjects; the slides concisely summarize the text, with pictures and minimal words, and there are also two videos; overall, this shows a lot of work on an important topic, and the method chosen is well used to illustrate the topic, excellent work. A+27

chronic -- 3 pages with subtitles, photos, and refspage; the idea of looking at how seniors handle chronic illness is good, however it might be possible to find interviews in the research literature; even if you have access to a 'home', permissions will still have to be negotiated; on the other hand, even one story might be enough for analysis; overall, good idea, still needs to be operationalised. A-16 project: late; 9 slides including titlepage, refspage, notes on 5/9 slides, and not equivalent to an essay; this is a generic look at 'coping with chronic illness' but is not about method, so finding some personal stories and accounts might bring it more online with the course topic. F10  redo: 4.27. 13 slides, including titleslide and refsslide; slides have pictures, and quite a bit of text on them, which makes for harder readability, but the theme is easy to follow; there are several cases, and advice on how to cope; the text in the notes still looks short, and the text on the slides needs to be pared down, but overall, good work. B+23
