Research Project:
Gulf2010 -- 3 people; 6 dspaced pages
including titlepage, refspage, subtitles, and pictures; excellent
summation of the event, and the reasons that led to the disaster;
there might have been regulatory problems too; overall, good topic
and treatment, the pictures really add to the presentation. A- 80%
16/20 Presentation: the video was too long, but the
presentation could have started with that; good visuals, text on
slides too small, and too many; took turns speaking, and there was a
lot of information; could have had more on the reasons for the
disaster; well organized and well-spoken, good focus on the
animal aspect. overall, excellent work. A- 80% 20/25 project:
3 people, 10 pdf dspaced pages including titlepage and refspage,
subtitles and pictures; lots of detail, and the issues are explained
well; could use more pictures; overall, excellent work. A- 80% 24/30
Polley2014 -- 3 dspaced pages
including titlepage, subtitles, no refspage; this was an incredible
disaster, and as you say, could easily have been prevented; more
specifics on the regulations and their (lack of) enforcement and
fines would add to the analysis; good beginning to an important
topic. B 75% 15/20 Presentation: described how tailings pond
failed; brief description of facts, and too much text on slides,
mostly read; well spoken and well organized, engaged with audience,
and showed useful images and videos; good info on effect on
indigenous people; academic but also easily understood; overall,
excellent work. A- 80% 20/25 Project: 8 dspaced pages
including titlepage and refspage, subtitles, no pictures; the
overall coverage of the disaster could use more (visual) detail, eg.
maps, charts; the writing is rough and could be rewritten to be
smoother; overall, good topic, could use more detail and stylistic
features. B+ 23/30 78%
TeckCoal -- 3 dspaced pages including
subtitles, picture, refspage; this is an important event, because it
highlights the need for regulations and their enforcement; a bit
short, but a good beginning. B- 70% 14/20 Presentation:
calm, read confidently from slides, which were well designed; wordy,
perhaps slides could be simplified; problems clearly defined; one
video repetitive; indigenous targeting well highlighted; good
information overall, ie. on selenium; overall, excellent work. A 82%
21/25 Project: Nine dspaced pages including two refspages,
no subtitles or pictures; overall, a good essay on the mining
company and its difficulties, and could be combined with the
presentation, where there are subtitles, pictures, etc; overall,
very comprehensive coverage of an important topic. A 85% 25/30
Nestle -- 4 dspaced pages including
refspage, picture, no subtitles; the ability of such large
corporations to effect the environment is incredible, and also
probably speaks to the lack of regulations or enforcement?; overall,
good topic, good beginning, could have more detail. B- 70% 14/20 Presentation:
great topic, so under the radar; spoke from minimal note with a
maximum of drama; knew the material, made eye contact, and spoke
confidently; short video overall, excellent work. A+ 88% 22/25 project:
13 slides, including titleslide and refsslide; slides very
informative, and backed up by minimal information in the notes
section, which could be expanded more; overall, excellent work,
should develop the essay component more. A- 24/30 80%
Sydney -- 2 people; 8 dspaced pages (!)
including subtitles, and 4 refpages; this is an important topic for
nova scotia, and could be compared to love canal, because of the
'domestic' contamination; using charts and pictures of the area will
show very clearly the impact on neighbouring residential areas;
overall, strong topic. B+ 78% 15.5/20 Presentation: short
video about the cleanup focused mainly n the engineering; took turns
talking with notes, almost too long; good use of concepts, eg.
environmental racism; well organized and engaged with audience;
addressed lack of accountability and long term effects; overall,
excellent work. A 21/25 project: 2 people, 21 slides, with
most of the information on the slides, which makes the essay
component short (essay provided separately); however, the
information included is good: history, pollution, remediation,
enviro-racism, etc; A 25/30 83%
DakotaAccess -- 2 dspaced pages
plus refspage (4 webrefs), and subtitles; this is perhaps the
largest protested pipeline project in recent times; the use of
intersectional theory, and of such concepts as environmental racism
really strengthen the analysis, as would including videos or photos
of protests; overall, excellent beginning. A- 80% 16/20 Presentation:
slides with pictures, too much text perhaps; showed lots of
conflict with natives, and discussed themes such as enviro-racism
and intersectionalism; good use of images from the protests;
overall, excellent work. A 84% 21/25 project: 14 slides,
including titleslide and refsslide, minimal text in notes and max on
slides, which makes for cluttered slides and a short essay; overall,
good topic, and explained well, should develop the essay component
more. B+ 78 23/30
Aberfan1966 -- 4 dspaced pages
including titlepage, refspage, subtitles, and picture; short and to
the point, the analysis points to corporate neglect, and perhaps
ineffective legislation?; good beginning on an old (but important)
case. B 75% 15/20 Presentation: timing was bit fast, and
should have had an intro overview, and more eye contact with the
audience; read from notes and showed abbreviated slides (without too
much information), although they were kind of plain; there was good
information on the role of the government; interesting theory on why
event happened; video was a good touch of the survivor
overall, excellent work. A- 80% 20/25 project: the notes
consist of 3 sspaced pages with subtitles, and could be put into the
notes on the slides; overall, good work, the writing is a bit rough
and could be smoother; could have more explicit development of the
enviro-theme. B 22.5/30 75%
WolfCulls -- 4 dspaced pages,
including titlepage, subtitles, picture, and refspage; animal rights
are such an important part of environmental justice; and the fact
that it was development which effected the caribou habitat in the
first place which made them easier prey shows that humans were the
problem; excellent beginning. A- 80% 16/20 Presentation:
short 10 min video with good pictures and a minimum of text; the
voice layover was easily understood, and discussed the reasons for
the culls, etc.; extensive citing of numbers of wolves culled, and
caribou saved; some mention of lack of public support; more
development of the connection to toxic and the environment would
strengthen the theme; overall, excellent work. A- 80% 20/25 Project:
10 slides made from stills of the presentation, no extra notes,
which makes for a lack of essay content. B 22.5/30 75%
AnimalActivism -- 5 sspaced
pages (!), including titepage, subtitles, and refspage; good summary
of the issues, with some historical details; the limits on activism
are certainly part of the problem and need to be exposed; filling in
with some species-specific facts, eg. pig pens, or veal stalls would
add detail. overall, excellent beginning. A 85% 17/20 Presentation:
overall, excellent work. Project: Ten dspaced pages
including titlepage, refspage, subtitles, no pictures; the treatment
of the topic of activism is comprehensive, especially when it
combines with 'rights' and 'environmentalism'. Overall, could use
some visuals, but otherwise excellent work. A 85% 25/30
Mi'kmaqFish -- 2 people; 5 dspaced
pages, including titlepage, extensive refspage, and subtitles; very
important topic, one that first came to much public attention after
Marshall 1998 (?), and events at Burnt Church; good use of legal
case references, could use some photos of conflict, eg.
Saulnierville; overall, excellent beginning. A-8016/20 Presentation:
short presentation with 2 min video, could be longer; short
history of treaties, took turns, mostly read; and the connection to
toxic/evironment could be clearer; the slides were well laid out,
and the information was easy to understand; overall, excellent work.
A- 80% 20/25 project: 15 slides, with the essay
component in the notes; overall, excellent work, and should make
more explicit how this is an environmental issue. A- 24/30 80%
Deforestation -- 2 people; 3
sspaced pages including subtitles, webrefs page, and a picture; this
presents a very comprehensive picture of the problem and potential
solutions; including what regulations exist and how they do/don't
help would add to the analysis; overall, excellent beginning. A 85%
17/20 Presentation: a bit short on time, and number of
slides; detailed on reasons for, and consequences of deforestaton;
connection to toxic/environment could be stronger; videos, and the
lorax fun; overall, excellent work. A- 80% 20/25 project:
2 people, 11 slides, with no notes, making for the lack of an essay
component. B- 70% 21/30
AnimalCruelty -- 5 sspaced pages
including titlepage, subtitles, and refspage; as noted, this is
important, because of issues like farm animal welfare, enviro
sustainability, and public health; there are a lot of facts cited,
which could be referenced; the role of regulation is highlighted, as
are humane issues; overall, excellent work. A 85% 17/20 Presentation:
slides of good quality, with only key information; critical
questions; 2 short (but intense) videos; overall, excellent work. A
84% 21/25 project: 11 dspaced pages with subitles, pictures,
titlepage and 2 refspages; lots of technical information on the
issues, plus suggestions for change read well. overall, excellent.
A- 24/30 80%
