Research work-- proposal and project
freshwater -- proposal: 2 people,
2 sspaced pages including references (none academic); it opens with
a discussion of Shoal First Nation, and the city of Winnipeg and how
it takes water (environmental theft) from the FN, leaving Lake
Winnipeg polluted; stylistically, adding subtitles would help
identify and develop themes more, and adding pictures would add to
the visualization of what the problem looks like; overall, good
topic, needs more context (ie. boil water advisories, third world
conditions, efforts at cleanup ), and visual development, especially
for two people. B-14 redo: 4 sspaced pages including
subtitles, pictures, and refs; this shows a lot of work, in both
style and content. A- 16/20 presentation: 2 people, 16
slides with lots of detail, 25 minutes for a good time overall;
focus on protesting, 1989-2019 period; 2 minute video (global news);
discussion of eutropic water in lakes, and the consequences of the
politics of no action; overall, good length and depth of issue; are
there other relevant examples of 'environmental theft'?; overall,
good presentation A-21/25. project: 16 slides with pictures,
(too much text on some), and essay notes; extensive refs; overall,
this has a lot of detail, and he environmental implications are
clear; overall, excellent work. A25.5 85%
grafprotest -- proposal: 2
sspaced pages with subtitles and pictures, no references; this is a
great idea, looking at environmental graffiti as protest; the
examples are good, and the theme of protest is good; ir would
benefit from a few references, and more description/analysis of the
examples, but overall excellent beginning. A 17/20 presentation:
20 minutes, 14 slides; 'environmental graffiti and the power of
the visual; lots of colours, pictures, minimal text; spoke well,
knew the topic. overall, excellent presentation. A22/25 project:
15 slides, with essay notes; excellent idea, the power of the
visual, and the decolonization of protest. A+ 27/3090%
animalrights -- proposal: 3
sspaced pages, including subtitles, webrefs; key in animal rights
activism is the media, and how they can be used for education, and
also how they portray the activists; three theories will be used:
framing, moral panic, and social identity theory; it is unclear what
'media' will be used, and how it will be selected, but the overall
idea of looking at the effect of media coverage is good. B 15 presentation:
15 minutes, 15 slides; voiceover used, fairly effective; pictures
and text were used, eg. chemicals, animal rights, framing of moral
panics; topic not so much about activism as animal rights; ends with
the significance of research objectives; some slides out of synch,
could be reorganized; case study about terrorist act, could be
rethought; overall, slides designed well, could be
shuffled/reorganized better. good work A-20/25. project: 15
slides with voiceover, refspage (websites?, none academic), no essay
notes; interesting pictures, altho too muchtext on slides; more
could be made of the media representations and their effect on the
public; overall, good topic, needs an essay, and could focus more on
theory/media. B+23/30 78%
earth --proposal: this looks like a
very exciting and interesting project: "what if the earth could
fight back", using various elements like water, air, and earth; the
descriptions of each of the ten sections is nuanced and evocative,
to be accompanied by pictures and poetry; this is very creative (and
ambitious), could benefit from a few references and a sample of the
poetry, but overall excellent work. A+ 18/20 presentation: 10
slides, 15 minutes; slides about issues, eg. regulatory failure;
green criminology slide good; knew the issues and spoke well;
overall, the poems were read -- excellent touch, and the slides
could be minimised, reordered, A 22/25 project: 13 slides of
poetry, prefaced with 'if the earth could fight back' poem (fit for
apocalypse course) ; some references at the end, but no essay in the
notes -- could have benefitted from a textual premise, outline;
overall, excellent work, very creative. A+ 27/30 90%
quebecforest -- proposal: two
pages of notes, with pictures and intext references; there is a lot
of history here, and reference to indigenous rights; a more
conventional organization of text and references would enhance the
text's presentation, but this is an important piece of historical
confrontation over forestry; good beginning. B+15.5 presentation:
12 slides, with lots of text, no visuals; spoke fast, too much
regulatory detail; info on indigenous response to government actions
(contrary to UNDRIP); info on protests and blockades; concept of
'intergenerational theft' good; overall, could balance time and
visual content more, A- 20/25 project: 14 colourful slides,
including titlepage and 3 refspages; an excellent summary of the
issues, clearly presenting the Bill and its features, the
difficulties with the legislation, and the voices of those speaking
against it; overall, interesting, important, and well-presented. A
25.5/30 85%
corpfishing -- proposal: 1 page
with subtitles, no refs; the net is cast quite widely, but doesn't
catch many fish :) the topic is quite broad, and that is okay if it
is a series of issues that add up to widespread corporate
exploitation of ocean resources; overall, quite broad, could be
narrowed down, or supported by some research. C+13 redo:
12.05 3 sspaced pages with subtitles, research plan, picture, and
references; still very broad in scope but well presented in terms of
the fishery collapse and its implications for communities, and its
relevance to a green crim; A 24/25 presentation: 14 slides,
5 minutes? (too fast); organized, read from note cards; 'slow
violence' is a good concept, as is 'intergenerational impact';
environmental crime and social inequality are linked, which makes
for a good critical concept to use in the presentation; could use
more historical detail, especially the impact on traditional and
native communities. overall, informative and interesting, should
slow it down and add more in some areas. A-20/25 project: 14
slides including titleslide and refslide; no essay in notes, but in
separate document (7 dspaced pages); good discussion of the
technical issues, eg. overfishing; more could be done on the 'green
criminology' implications; overall, good work, could integrate the
essay and presentation, and expand on the implications for research
and a traditional lifestyle. B+23/30 &78%
birthdefects -- proposal: late;
5 pages, including titlepage, refspage; a very important issue, and
would benefit from subtitles (to organize themes and issues), and
photos (of swprotests?); and perhaps there could be something added
on any treatments that were tried; overall, good topic, good
beginning presentation:
