research projects:

greatdepression -- proposal: double submission, 2 pages with subtitles and pictures, and a refspage; generally, looking at how precarity influences survival behaviour and social control is good, and linking it to the great depression using concepts of strain and ethno-history strengthens the analysis; overall, excellent themes, and well-written, with good use of archival materials. A+ 18/20

racismanxiety -- proposal: double submission; titlepage, 2 pages text, and references; looking at the anxiety caused due to racialized discrimination is a good topic, and it needs to be explicitly linked to the concept of ethnography, and perhaps to crisis, if it is to serve as an apocalypse topic -- as in, for example, seeing covid19 as a moment of precaria... overall, needs to more explicitly link to the courses. B- 14/20 presentation: 15 mins, 12 slides; read from notes, low-key; used concepts like 'racial battle fatigue', 'indirect exposure to violence generates trauma', and 'generational trauma'; also used story from friend which could have been developed more; mentioned apocalyptic-like type events like george floyd and nicole good; short 2 min video clip; overall, good coverage, could develop both themes of ethnography and apocalypse more. B 22.5/30

abughraib -- proposal: double submission; 2 pages with subtitles, pictures, and references; this is an excellent combination of ethnographic analysis using public documents and the concepts of anomie and surveillance, to demonstrate how a visual analysis can have the power of apocalyptic revelation; overall, well organized, well written, and an excellent formulation of the project. A+ 18/20

homelessness -- proposal: 2 pages text plus 2 refs; the idea is good, that survival behaviours are criminalized; looking at the structural lack of resources, and the structural response to people living with those limitations is good ... it's almost like an 'ethnography of place'... overall, excellent premise and well written, could use subtitles to organize themes and issues more. A- 16/20 presentation: 8 slides, narrative voiceover, short at 10 mins?; visual issues of survival, photos of tents, location unclear; issues of structural constraints here, need for improved help and support, less police; overall, good topic, could have more on ethnography, reasons for homeless, the crime angle, and what could be done; could be more enthusiastic on the video, but it worked well; could be longer. B+ 23/30 project: 9 slides with a good mix of text and pictures on each; no text in notes...the ethnographic view is important, as are the structural constraints; 'improved help and support' starts to get at how the criminalization response is inadequate; overall, missing the essay component, and could develop the ethnographic angle more.

sexworkstigma -- proposal: 2 people, 3 pages text plus 3 references; there is a lot of detail here, and using subtitles would help organize the themes more, eg. clients, policing, reasons for choosing that 'lifestyle' and so on; photos would also enhance the stylistic aspect of the project as wel, and who this person is should be explained; overall, good beginning, could be organized more thematically. B 15/20  presentation: 8 slides, about 15 mins; low key speaking, took turns; reference to new zealand, showed last 3 mins of her ted talk; could have had more on ethnography; overall, good audience contact, could have had more pictures, nice ideas about sex work as a chosen career, not just a media moral panic. B 22.5/30

burningcouches -- proposal: 4 pages including titlepage, subtitles, and refspage; this is a nice way to put it: "the event as a cultural phenomenon embedded in student identity"; the project is quite ambitious, in that it suggests observation and interviews 'at the end of term' -- it might be better to use the news reports as resources to construct the 'event'; overall, good topic, could be reformulated. B- 14/20 presentation: excused from actual presenting; 17 slides, no text in the notes; minimal text on slides describing the practice, could use more detail, and there are are also several local photos; overall, interesting, local, almost a harmless practice, could use more of the ethnographic detail. C+ 20/30

sexworkstories -- proposal: 4 pages including titlepage, footnotes, and refs; this is quite comprehensive, with excellent sources, and a planned interview; adding subtitles would help organize themes more in the text, and adding photos (and poems?) would add more stylistic detail; overall, this is sensitive and ambitious, excellent beginning. A 17/20 presentation: 16 slides, 20 mins; 'another day on the job' -- slides had too much text and only a few pics; went overtime, but handled questions well; low-key delivery, however good focus on stories, and the voice was strong in the interview with Jules -- this was the best part of the presentation; overtime, excellent focus on the interview, and the moments of clarity and insight within that was both surprising and powerful; overall, excellent, shows a lot of work, could work on the slide style more.  A 25/30

dragqueens -- proposal: 4 people, 4 pages with subtitles, pictures, refs; the project is quite ambitious, with plans to interview people? -- how will they be selected, through personal contacts, snowball sampling, etc?; it is possible to construct a story using found resources, such as social media posts, demonstration photos, etc; overall, good topic, excellent background, needs more discussion of method. A- 16/20 presentation: 15 slides, about 15 mins; a brief history of the subculture, and mention of policy 713 in schools, comment on above average gender diversity in NB; focused on lived experiences, and the interview was semi-structured with local students 'saran wrap' and 'rhonda odyssey', and focus on quality not quantity; comment on community and subculture politics; overall, spoke well, shared the work well, enthusiastic, could use more pictures on the slides, good quality, grabbed the audience's attention. A- 24/30

homelessincanada -- wouldn't open initially; 4 pages including titlepage, 2 pages text, and refspage; this is (mostly) a reflection on the personal wish to learn about the topic, which could be a methods topic, but should also reflect on what that might mean, consulting sources, finding subjects, etc; overall, needs information, eg. NB material, eg. moncton homeless B- 14/20 presentation: spoke easily, began with a personal anecdote; nice slides with minimal text, simple pictures; types of homelessness, reasons, laws, costs and harms, myth vs reality; stats on moncton; perhaps there are interviews available which could fill out the personal side more; overall, answered questions well, well-organized, informative and good delivery, could emphasize 'ethnography' more. B 22.5/30
