There is a need for Canadian academics and social work practitioners to come together to discuss the topic of spirituality and social work practice. Issues related to spirituality and social work in Canada will be expressed differently from the American scene as our history is different, we seem less concerned about the separation of church and state and there is stronger emphasis on social change and political action . Unfortunately, the Canadian literature on the topic of spirituality and social work, and more generally literature on spirituality and the helping professions, is not well developed. The Third Annual Canadian Conference on Spirituality and Social Work scheduled for June 2-3 in Winnipeg, Manitoba will be held in conjunction with the annual conference of the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work. The theme for the 2004 Spirituality Conference is “Personal Identity and Transformation” and the conference will bring together academics, researchers, graduate students and social work practitioners, to continue Canadian dialogue on the topic. We hope this conference will contribute to Canadian research and publications, and to the creation of a Canadian forum focussing on spirituality and social work. Plans are underway for a Special Issue of the electronic journal Critical Social Work, including selected presentations from the 2003 conference, is being planned for late 2003/early 2004. This web-site is one of the vehicles through which Canadian dialogue and scholarship related to spirituality and the helping professions can be developed.
