The English Language Arts Proficiency assessment results for the Province of New Brunswick consistently reveal that there is a discrepancy between males and females. Analysis of New Brunswick Provincial Assessment Results in Reading and Language Arts Proficiency for School District 18 (Fredericton, N.B.) continues to reveal that boys in the Core English Program are significantly less successful than girls. The 1999 Provincial Assessment Results for School District 18 confirmed that 147 out of 366 boys (40%) in the Core English Program were unsuccessful compare to 95 out of 304 girls (31%) on the Provincial Assessment, Grade 8 English Language Arts Proficiency. The 2000 results revealed relatively little change. The principle researchers recognize the need to provide additional strategies to assist boys in the English Language Arts program. The value of the project is to intervene and attempt to alleviate the discrepancy between male and female literacy performance.
