Prompt #5
January 26, 2011

tracking your own learning

In the document on evaluation in the online introduction to the course, I said,

After the course is underway -- about the second or third week -- I'll invite you to begin a process whereby one of your regular weekly tasks will be to write a public reflective learning journal, a "learning log," keeping track of your own learning and sharing it with others.
It's time to start this process.

reflect on your learning

Begin by taking a few minutes to reflect on what's happened in English 2223 since January 14. Use a word processor to write about that for about ten minutes. You don't need to be elegantly organized: these are notes.  But they should be concrete and thorough; someone who doesn't already know what you're talking about should be able to figure it out. Write it for an audience of people who are also enrolled in the course, so you don't need to explain details at that level -- but write as concretely as you can about learning. Try to be specific: if you say you learned something, specify how you learned it -- what the situation was, who said or wrote what triggered it, etc. Try to avoid being general, or effusive about how wonderful it all is (or the opposite). Things you might write about so far might have to do with reading scripts or things you've discovered about the specific play and writer, or things you've learned about doing research. Or something else: surprise us. Save this as a file. Now set up your learning journal.

Setting up your learning journal

Like much else in Moodle, the process is surprisingly straightforward. Here's a step-by-step explanation.

That's it. Next week, you do exactly the same thing, and your new post will appear above the old one.

Do this all before next Sunday night at midnight. One of the regular tasks you'll be doing is adding an entry to your learning journal each week -- it doesn't matter when, but I'll do the count as of Sunday night. If you post something between one Sunday midnight and the next it will count for that week.
