some serious decisions

A Playgoers' Companion

It wasn't clear that the proposed Playgoers' Companions (or, really, wiki pages) were all ready for choosing on Monday morning, so I postponed assessing them till yesterday. I've made some tentative decisions, but I think (as I usually think) that it's almost always the case that people learn more by being placed in the position of teacher than they do by being left in the position of student, so here's what I propose for this morning: you think about which of the five possibilities you'd propose -- and, most important, why. I've created some groups each of which (as far as possible) includes someone from each of the groups designated to create the wikis in the first place. Here they are:

Group A
Amber Carroll
Randall Umali
Brandon Thibodeau
Jesse Middleton
John Russell
Erica Betts
Group B
Katie Dow
Emily Cochrane
Valerie  Chisholm
Josie Blackmore
Ashley MacDonald
Lisa Schellenberg
Group C
Alexander Brown
Jilly Hanson
Matt Goodwin
Erin Pollock
Luke Tucker
Adam Washburn
Group D
Vanessa Whittaker
Juliana Duque
Elyse  Bernais
Andrea  Peters
Lucas Martin
Group E
Sara Garrett
Megan Wilson
Georgia Priestley-Brown
Kirsten Graham
Kenneth Noble
Nigel Bone

I'll give each group a printout of all five proposed texts. Your job is to make your own decision. Which of these is the one you'd like most to see properly formatted, laid out, broken up with graphics, and printed?  And, most important, why?  Discuss it, and agree on one, and a clear, persuasive statement of what you -- as a group -- agree makes it more likely to be of use to that mythical theatregoer sitting down in Memorial Hall tonight. (if, as a footnote, you want to suggest a close second, or a way of combining two to make the best possible Companion, you can add that as a footnote: but finally, you have to decide on one, and some clear reasons). I'll give each group a report form.

Preferences about plays to work on (continued)

As I said Friday, we need to be planning for who is going to work on research, and Playgoers' companions, for which plays.  The list is pretty nearly final (there've been a couple of changes since then). Right now, the plays include ones listed on the course list of plays (reproduced here):

You'll notice the operas are gone: I've given up on contacting the Empire Theatre folks, and they would have, I think, been a not-very-satisfactory substitute for live theatre in any case. And the director of the Windsor Theatre production of Good Night Desdemona has decided she'd rather not have a Playgoers' Companion, and I suspect that means we won't find a number of people who'd like to read the script and travel to Sackville to see the production. And Michael Frayn's Copenhagen has been added to the list of possible plays to read and see, though since the theatre company has already planned their own "study guide" for the play they didn't think they could fit in a Playgoer's Companion (and we wouldn't have had time to do one anyway). It's still possible people could use that as one of their four plays to read and see.

Task Forces

Based on the emailed preferences I had received this morning, and a random distribution of the rest, here are six lists of people whowill form the Task Force (research group) for each of the six plays we have available.  (Unless changes are made this morning; if you want to swap with someone, both of you should give me a note at the end of class or email me this morning).

Scripts for all these plays will be available as soon as possible, I hope by the end of this week (TBA, however, may take a bit longer).

Attending plays: an addition

I did not know that Saint John Theatre Company was going to put on Copenhagen (a wonderful play, by a superlative playwright: Google it, and him) until late last week. But because they are, I want to make sure it's possible for us to use the play as one of our possible shows to read about and attend. A problem, however, is that unless there are at least four people who read the script and attend the show, there really can't be an online discussion of reading and seeing it. I expect that I'll be going to see the show, and if there were (at least) three others who were interested, I would participate in the online discussion of it. I have a script, and can make copies available. If you are interested, email me before the end of this week.
