Discussing some Dryden, exploring comedy
In class this morning
We discussed what people have had to say and ask about the first three sections of the Essay of Dramatic Poesy that we've read and summarized. We took the first half hour to read the other four summaries and think of a couple of questions and / or comments about each. For next time, take a half hour or so to reread the summaries of the fourth and fifth sections and post a couple of questions and comments about each on the Forum.
Moving to comedy
More important, between now and Wednesday, go to the library and find one of the general literary histories or one of the anthologies that includes a general introduction (both are listed on the course Web site) that has a discussion of Restoration and eighteenth century comedy. Read (or skim) the discussion, and put together a list of five or six comedies first performed in the hundred years after about1680 that the writer thinks are especially important. Create a page summarizing your findings, in this form: list the source you're working with in full bibliographical form at the top, then the five or six plays in chronological order, with, after each, a quote or summary from your source indicating why it's important. Post the page on your section of the Recommending some comedies wiki, by 8:00 Wednesday morning.
