English 3236 Restoration and Eighteenth Century Drama and Theatre
Prompt # 60
3 April 2013

Some more scenes and background

For today, we'll consider Kayla's proposed scene from Wycherley's The Plain-Dealer, and Matt's from Behn's The Rover. We'll organize this around the questions that have been posted to the Questions on scenes from comedies forum.

Because it's so widely known (and it's often cited as a reason the play was not performed, after the Restoration, till the 20th century), I want also, between now and next time, to look quickly at the "China" scene from The Country Wife. I've put a text up on the Web site, along with some of the context you need to understand what's going on. There is a short, heavily edited video here; Read the text and post three questions about it on the forum.

On Friday, we'll look at Adam's scene from The Way of the World and mine from The School for Scandal. Please read both scenes and post at least three questions about each on the Forum before class Friday at nine. I'll post both scenes and comments to make them accessible.

And on Wednesday, April 10, we'll discuss the five reports on contemporary background texts. These reports will need to be posted before Monday, and read before class time.
