Prompt # 61

Readings in Johnson

Occasional writings

The last prompt, and the email from Friday, said:

We'll begin with the "occasional writings" suggested by Paige, Nicole and Georgia. The link to their assignment page, where you can find the readings, is on the "Johnson Groups" page.
As you read, keep a journal or log of questions, reflections, responses, problems, and by class time post it on the Occasional Writing section of the Aspects of Johnson forum (link is on the main page and on the group's assignment page).
Going through the readings circulated last time, I couldn't find enough sections clearly marked to transcribe. This time, let's try this: I'll pass around copies of the journals and ask everybody to select one passage you'd like, right now, to direct our attention to. We'll discuss as many as we can.

Biographies

The email from last night said:

Just so you'll know in case you have time to read a bit ahead, the assignment for Wednesday will be the two chunks of biographies of the Life of Milton and the Life of Savage -- recommended by the biographies group, here:
https://moodle.stu.ca/moodle/mod/wiki/view.php?id=33140
We'll discuss details and respond to questions in class MonWednesday.
It's worth reading the group's explanations and comments. As you read that, and in Johnson's biographical writing, be aware of three questions we might need to discuss. Reading this, what can we learn about: Post a reflection on any of those questions, or anything else you think worth commenting on or discussing as a result of your reading, in the forum on Johnson's biographical writing.

Next week

On Monday we'll consider Johnson's periodical writing, as assigned by the periodical essays group. Please don't miss reading, as well as the assignments in the main wiki page, the comments from individual members of the group linked at the bottom of the page.

And finally, on Wednesday, we'll look at Johnson, Boswell, and Scotland, as assigned by the Johnson's own biography group.
