2.  Sneak Preview and Open Rehearsal of Phantom of the Opera at the Playhouse October 12

The Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada will be holding an open rehearsal and sneak preview of their upcoming performance of Phantom of the Opera at the Playhouse on October 12 from 4 – 7 pm.  An Open Rehearsal is a fascinating opportunity to watch the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada at work, and see how a professional dance performance is shaped and polished by the choreographer and dancers.

Tickets have been flying out the door for the nationally renowned dance troupe’s rendition of the famous 1910 Gaston Leroux novel, and this is your chance to see what happens behind the scenes! Moves are refined, choreography is evolved, and dancers perfect each movement with precision and detail.

There is no charge to attend the event, and all are welcome! Feel free to drop in for five minutes or stay for three hours. This is your chance to explore the rigorous personal and artistic challenges that professional dancers face to keep in shape and prepare for a performance.

With original choreography by Igor Dobrovolskiy and set to the music of Francis Poulenc, Phantom features fabulous costumes and dramatic sets. The ethereal mix of light and shadows perfectly captures a love triangle which ensnares the phantom, the young opera singer whom he loves and the dashing young viscount who wins her heart.

4.  Geordie Millar Procession Opening at The Gallery October 13

The Gallery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is pleased to present Geordie Millar, Procession, opening Friday, October 13 from 4:30 – 6 pm.

When viewers enter the gallery they will be drawn into a world of Percheron horses, specifically one horse progressing, through different drawings, around the walls of the gallery.

Geordie Millar's mission is to achieve a personal re-conceptualization of animals in art.

Born in southern Ontario in 1967, he studied both at the Art Students League and the National Academy of New York City.

Miller moved to New Brunswick in 1998. Since that time, his work has become focused on human and animal forms and the worlds they inhabit on land and beneath the water. Exploring and interpreting the delicate relationship of human communities and the natural environments that both sustain and threaten them has become a core conceptual concern in the artist's otherwise very rigorous and traditional approach to drawing and painting.

He scuba dives and travels throughout the province researching and developing new works.

Millar has exhibited across Canada, the US and Europe and his works are represented in private and public collections internationally. He resides in northern New Brunswick where he maintains a studio and teaches anatomy and life drawing.

On Saturday, October 21 from 9-12 and 1-4 pm join Geordie Millar for a day of figure and horse drawing at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. The cost is $25. For more information and registration contact Karen Ruet at 457-6805.

8.  odd sundays at molly’s is Back with Enthusiasm!

Sunday, October 15

2 pm, Molly’s Coffee House, 554 Queen, Fredericton

Open Set / Discussion (new this season)

— Bring your thoughts on, Music and Literature: A marriage of convenience and ecstasy.

odd sundays at molly’s (Fredericton’s longest-running poetry reading series) has begun its fall-winter 2006 schedule and you are all welcome!  This coming Sunday we are focusing on the intertwining of music and literature.  For the open set, a tradition at odd sundays, bring your poem, your short piece of prose, or your song lyric.  Maybe one of you will bring a guitar and sing your own song for us!  The discussion following will concentrate on the intermingling of music and literature.  When does a piece of writing have the form and musical quality of a song?  Does the outpouring of the poet’s own thoughts and feelings make a poem lyrical—lyre or no lyre (but no liars, please)?  What place does the ear have in poetry?  Or in prose?

Join us at odd sundays at molly’s for an interesting Sunday afternoon, engaging in the vast (and sometimes profound) literary conversation that envelops us all.

For information please contact acalvern@nbnet.nb.ca  or 459-1436.  It all happens in New Brunswick, Canada’s poetry province.

P.S. UNB Creative Writing graduate Sean Johnston will be returning to read from his newest work, the novel All This Town Remembers. The reading will take place on Thursday, October 19, at 8 pm in the McConnell Hall Senior Common Room, UNB Fredericton. Everyone is welcome to attend.

12.  Stanford School or Irish Dancing to perform with Beòlach at the Playhouse October 18

Straight from Cape Breton, Beòlach will be performing as part of the @theplayhouse Made in Canada series on October 18, joined by students from Fredericton’s own Stanford School of Irish Dancing.

Beòlach is a Gaelic word meaning 'lively youth' and is also one of Cape Breton's most exciting new young bands. The group performs an energetic mix of Cape Breton, Scottish, and Irish tunes featuring piano, pipes, whistles, guitar, and fiddles.

The group recorded their self titled debut album in the summer of 2001 at Lakewind Sound in Point Aconi, Cape Breton. The album features original compositions as well as the group’s unique dynamic arrangements of their favourite traditional tunes.

Beòlach has thrilled audiences with energetic performances, witty presentation, and their versatility as stepdancers. Cape Breton tunes are removed from their usual fiddle/piano context and presented with the energy of a young six piece band. Although presenting these tunes in a contemporary style, Beòlach maintains a respect and understanding of Cape Breton music.

The Stanford School of Irish Dancing opened in September 2001 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It is New Brunswick's first Irish Dance school registered officially with An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha in Dublin, Ireland.  An Coimisiun serves to preserve the standards and quality of Irish Dance worldwide. Only the students of registered schools are eligible to attend any sanctioned competition. Founder, Sharon Stanford is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring her love of Irish dance and culture to the people of New Brunswick. The Stanford School of Irish Dancing focuses on encouraging all of its students to reach their full potential in this dynamic and exciting art form, through both solo and team dancing.

Tickets are on sale for Beòlach featuring the Stanford School of Irish Dancing at the Playhouse box office, 458-8344 or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.

13.  Brilliant! will electrify you with the story of Niloka Tesla

October 25 at the Fredericton Playhouse

Who invented electricity? Thomas Edison of course…right? Everybody knows that Thomas Edison devised electric light and domestic electricity supplies; that Guglielmo Marconi thought up radio and George Westinghouse built the world's first hydro-electric power station. Everybody knows these 'facts' but they are wrong.

The man who dreamt up these things also invented the fluorescent light, seismology, a worldwide data communications network and a mechanical laxative. His name was Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American scientist, and is without doubt, this century's greatest unsung scientific hero. This is his story.

Brilliant! The Blinding Enlightenment of Nikola Tesla is an explosive, extradimensional and theatrical exploration of one of the most formidable inventing minds of the past one hundred years.

The story, set in turn of the century New York, chronicles the career of Nikola Tesla, the inventor of alternating current, whose work in the field of electricity ushered-in the modern age. In Tesla’s Victorian world we see a reflection of our modern times: a world where new technology dazzles and fascinates with its promises while at the same time threatens, provoking social paranoia with its unknown implications for humanity.

The story is told with playfully eclectic staging depicting a fierce battle between Tesla and Thomas Edison; detailing Tesla’s descent into madness in his desert laboratory; and chronicling Tesla’s extraordinary visions and dreams.

Brilliant! explores the human impulse for creation, as well the loneliness and isolation of an inventive mind that dreams at a scale too large for its time.

Brilliant! is the most produced show of the Electric Company Theatre to date, playing to sold-out crowds at festivals and on the main stage. Don’t miss your chance to see it as part of the @theplayhouse Heroes and Icons series, Wednesday, October 25 at 8 pm. Tickets are on sale at the Playhouse box office, 458-8344 or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.

Brilliant! Is part of the In Conversation Seriesl.

14.  In Conversation series continues at the Fredericton Playhouse

The Fredericton Playhouse is continuing it’s after show artist talks for an exciting new season of In Conversation.  Designed to add depth and richness to patrons’ live performance experience, In Conversation will be moderated by a series of guest hosts and take place at the Crowne Plaza Lord Beaverbrook Hotel.   In an informal and conversational style, In Conversation will follow five selected performances from the 2006-07 @theplayhouse season.   The series is designed to give audience members an opportunity to learn more about the artists’ background and who they are.  It will explore their particular art form and highlight the development, motivation and creation of the artist(s) and their work.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, October 25 following the widely acclaimed performance of Brilliant! The Blinding Enlightenment of Nikola Tesla, with guest Cynthia Reid, Producing Manager for the Electric Company Theatre. Moderated by guest host Christine McLean, you will be invited to journey into the magic of its production as you explore its creation and theatrical history.

15.  Ben Sures to perform at Molly’s Coffee House November 1

John Lennon songwriting award winner, Ben Sures, will be coming to Fredericton on Wednesday November 1, 8 pm at Molly's Coffee House, 554 Queen Street

Edmonton's Ben Sures (www.bensures.com), last year's winner in the folk category of the John Lennon songwriting contest will be performing his first shows ever in the Maritimes from November 1 – 8.

Sures won the award for his song Any Precious Girl, a unique and compassionate take on mental illness that appears on his CD, Goodbye Pretty Girl.  The John Lennon Songwriting Contest is one of the most prestigious and lucrative songwriting competitions in North America, attracting approximately 15,000 entries annually.

Ben Sures has been a fixture in Canada's roots music scene for over a decade now, touring regularly in the style of the stereotypical "folk troubadour," supplementing his big city appearances with a host of house concerts, small festivals and gigs in out-of-the way places.

He has also composed for a number of film, radio and television projects, including the indie flick Hunters and Gatherers and several segments of Sesame Street.

Sures, who won his first songwriting competition in Kelowna in 1999, was born in Regina to artistic parents and has lived all over Canada - most recently in Edmonton and Winnipeg before settling in Toronto.
