important that a bulletin board/discussion board have elements of "push technology," such that participants are regularly reminded of the existence of the discussion, rather than having to remember to check back regularly (for more on the distinction between these various kinds of bulletin board, see my draft essay "Affordances and Constraints of Electronic Discussions"). Ideally, all the contributors "above" the message being replied to would received notification, too, unless they opted out.
