A student Web site should not be thought of, or be presented as, a kind of decorative "add-on," which is almost always the case when it's called a "home page" and where (e.g.) a menu invites the student to select background colors, add links to her "favorite sites," load pictures, tell about her hobbies, etc. -- as is the case, for instance, with Geocities or Tripod sites. It should be a working space. Other characteristics or desiderata are listed elsewhere, but this is central.
