Ideally the program that produces HTML pages should look, and act, like a basic word processor. Students in an English or Religious Studies or Sociology course should not have to learn HTML any more than they have to learn to read the codes that are "revealed" in WordPerfect to be part of the text. The program should allow for formatting text in basic ways, but should not invite decorations, colors, etc.; it should afford easy editing (in other words, ideally it would use basic, simple forms of HTML rather than the elaborate, paragraph-by-paragraph or even line-by-line formatting generated by saving a Word document as HTML.
