Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing. 3rd ed., ed. Edgar V. Roberts and Henry E. Jacobs. Englewood Cliffs: Prentice-Hall, 1992.
Addition to the report of Edward Barffit.
This text is focused on learning the basic skills of reading, writing,
and responding. It is published in 1992. It has a wide variety of different
types of texts in which it uses to teach; for example there are poems in
the anthology which use rhyming words to create interesting pictures. As
for the dominent gender in the writers for this anthology, there are not
any. Both male and female writers have written work in the text.
There is also allot of terminology present in the anthology refering
to poetry. Such definitions as blank verse and couplet are viewed in depth.
This anthology focuses on learning how to write a piece of work by instruction
and rules set out to follow. There are many examples given of good pieces
of work as well as ideas on how to write your piece of work to the standards
of those found in the Anthology. I think the market audience for this type
of book would be a grade twelve class or even any first year University
class. I think this book would help a student in any disiplin to strenthen
their writing ability.
I think the authors are trying to help one grow through literature by example and elaborate detail of what makes a text 'good'. I think that this book focuses more on learning the skills to read and write as aposed to culture based. There are many different types of texts from different cultures but the emphasis is put else where.
