Stigmata
by Robert Todd Carroll
In Religious Studies the article that I have chosen for my topic is stigmata. It is excerpted from 'The Skeptics Dictionary'. The title of the article is 'Stigmata' and is written by Robert Todd Carroll. I am using this article for Religious Studies class as a way to help faculty to find suitable texts for teaching material. I am using Stigmata because I am interested in the unexplained.
Stigmata is when religious markings miraculously appear on an individual. This article chooses to take the idea of Stigmata and prove that it is not possible that a person could get these kind of religious markings. The author also discusses how humans who are deeply into their religion sometimes feel the need to prove to others that their religion is not a fraud when in fact they themselves are the fraud.
Because what I wanted to find for an article was one that would be suitable
for a professor to use I do not think this article would be completely
suitable. Reason being is that the author has a completely bias approach.
Even though he gives well thought out reasons why stigmata is not possible
he fails to explain why it could be possible and the evidence for stigmata.
He discusses how when ever a religious marking appears there is no one
around to see it happen thus no evidence it ever occurred.
