Abstract

Tania, who has been a freelance tutor and creator of a private tutoring agency in Edmonton, has found "proofreading" impossible to avoid in this context. However, she attempted to redeem the practice of proofreading from infamy by showing that it could go beyond mere surface correction. She also placed her tutoring practice within cultural and academic contexts, describing the standards and practices of tutoring in Hong Kong, where 90% of her tutees originate, and introducing the data from a "tutoring ethics" questionnaire sent to instructors at the University of Alberta's English Department.
