Manchester
August 28

We had a nine-hour layover, so we went downtown on the wonderful train, and discovered that the whole downtown is served by three free bus lines. The first thing we saw when we got off the first bus was this listing of theatre performances  at the library theatre company (it's not just in London that this country is the home of live theatre). Here's the library itself  , a wonderful building with a stunning reading room under the central dome. Here's a pub we liked the look of  , and this is Chinatown, with the gate in the middle  , just up the street. We loved the city hall too  and the park by the bus station  with sculptures of what seemed to be halfway between clouds  and a tree, and the super  fountain, and back to the railway  station.

On to the next day
