Discerning the Spirit: Re-Imagined Social Work:
The Fourth Annual Canadian Conference
on Spirituality and Social Work

May 26-28, 2005
King's College
University of Western Ontario
London, Ontario

We were pleased to welcome Rabbi Dow Marmur as our keynote speaker this year.  Dow Marmur is an internationally known Canadian author and is well known for his scholarship and his demonstrated excellence in the area of spirituality.  Dow Marmur's Keynote Address was titled "Holiness as Responsibility for Other."

The conference also included experiential workshops, presentations, and facilitated discussions by clinicians and scholars with expertise in the area of spirituality, and by graduate students conducting research in this field.  Abstracts on each presentation and workshop has been retained under Presentations and Workshops.  Several of the presenters and workshop leaders submitted more detailed papers and outlines and these are included in the Conference Proceedings.

It is important to point out that several presentations from the 2005 conference have been sent out for peer review as they are being considered for publication in a dedicated issue of the on-line journal Critical Social Work.  Dr. John Coates and Dr. John Graham are co-editing this edition.

Presentation topics included:
    • Spirituality and Adult Education
    • Duel Identity: The Experience of Gay Christian Males
    • Encountering the Spirit in Clinical Work
    • The Muslims in New York Project: Social Service Delivery
    • Nurturing Competence in Uncertainty: A Place for Spirituality and Transformative Learning
    • Spirituality and Clinical Research
    • Spirituality and Wellness; Obstacles to Psychology’s Potential for Reconciliation with Spiritual and Religious Traditions
