Assignments: All assignments are (in general) excuseable
but not makeupable.
#1.15. What is the consequence of the 'shift in narrative' from
the hero to the victim (wrt news coverage of westray)?
#2. 17. How could you diagram Shirley's story (perhaps in
comparison with the other two narratives?
#3. 1.29. What (and why) is there a standard structure to the
(AIDS) survivors stories.
#4. 2.05. Why are emotions important for ethnographies?
#5. 2.19. As discused in class, why is the villain narrative
important?
#6. 2.21. How are these (sculptures) visual metaphors, and how are
they useful?
#7. 2.26. Pick one pro tip from the video, "How to
Interview Victims like a Pro," 6mins e
#8. 2.28. In lieu of class, how informed are the interviewing
techniques suggested in the "Research manual: Interviewing
Techniques in Domestic Violence Cases: In-Service Training For
Police," link

proposals and projects:
tattoos: 2 single spaced pages with subtitles, and
refspage; interesting topic, and one which goes far back in
history, and which became very popular after Captain Cook brought
evidence of them back to Europe; like you say, there are different
reasons for tattoos, which means there might also be different
'communities', so it might be more useful to limit the sampling to
university students; that would make it easier to make the
conclusions more generalizable, and provide a uniform sample;
additionally, the 'defiant' tattoo might be a sign of deviance,
but 'conformity' is a subcultural sign as well; overall, this is a
good topic, and easily doable; limiting the sample might be
better, which will make it easier to get examples; including some
in this proposal might have been nice. B75% 15/20
homelessness: 5 double-spaced pages with subtitles, and 2
references; the topic of advocacy is a good one, because of the
pervasiveness of social media in these days, and applying it to
homelessness is interesting, however the scope of the research is
too broad; perhaps leave out the interviews and look at the case
studies and content analysis, as that will give you lots to work
with; overall, good topic, could be narrowed down to make it more
workable. B 75% 1520
crime scenes: about 10 double spaced pages (too long!),
with pictures, subtitles, and references page; there are some good
ideas here, based on how the public reacts to the crimes which
occurred, which seems curious, to associate a place with a crime,
literally to embed a place; there are many examples and themes, so
it might be good to narrow them down a bit; overall, good topic,
good organization, perhaps use fewer examples or themes. B+77%
15.5/20
luigimangione: 10 slides with notes,
pictures, and a few references; this is a good topic, as it is
timely, and poses some questions about how image is created and
reflects innocence and guilt in a society which heavily uses
(social) media as a source of information; using content analysis
and/or discourse analysis to get at the themes is a good methods
choice, although it is a bit unclear how a sample will be selected
or what themes will be isolated; overall, excellent work. A- 80%
16/20
sexting: 3 double spaced pages plus
refspage, 2 subtitles; the idea of looking at how sexual risk is
topicalized in the mainstream media is workable, and should be
able to get at the (adult) crisis of sexting among teenagers;
keeping the sample 'opportunistic' will leave the method more
flexible, and focusing on discourse will separate it from the act;
overall, this is a good topic, and made workable by looking at
published mainstream discourse; including some text examples would
have added to the analysis; overall, good topic, and has the
potential of adding some insights to the (dominant) discourse. A-
80% 16/20
gymetiquette: four well designed and
laid out pages with pictures and subtitles, no references; this is
an interesting topic, because how does a person learn to 'do
gym'?; the sample size is large and might be narrowed down to make
it more manageable; the interview questions are quite structured,
and the whole surveying is going to take a lot of time, so perhaps
it could be made shorter, smaller?; why compare workers to users?;
an obvious angle might be gender, and how 'doing gym' is different
for females than males, and so perhaps including that as a
sub-themes would be useful; overall, this is a good topic, and
needs to be more manageable, and should be referenced. B+15.5 77%
mentalhealth: 3 single spaced pages
with subtitles and references; the idea of looking at social media
is good, because it is a more democratic forum than traditional
media; the sampling seems to be voluntary, so it is hard to
predict the uptake; some themes seem to be predictable, eg. the
increase in perceptions of mental problems, and that they might be
gendered and related to the transition to college, often at a
distance from home; overall, good topic, with a lot of resources.
