Assignments: Most assignments are excuseable but not
makeupable
Q1: wed 18th, watch Justice Denied (below), and discuss whether the
charge/conviction is fault/error based or a cognitive bias like
tunnel vision, racism. Due Fri 20th
Q2: wed 2nd, watch the video for the Guy Paul Morin case (45 mins),
and briefly summarize what went wrong, in 2 pages or less, for
handin/email on Friday, 4th
Q3: wed 9th, how does your group vote in the Gruenke case.
Q4: wed 16th, have you changed your mind in the Gruenke case?
Q5: mon 28th, pick a Dangerfield case, and discuss the social harm
to the individual.
Q6: fri 11.01, were Dangerfield's cases cognitive or fault-based?
Q7: fri 11.08, in lieu of class, what was the social harm in the
Mullins case (video on weblog)
Q8: w 11.20, wrt Coffin case, was this justice at its best?
Q9: mon 25th, wrt Erin Walsh case, which scenario best explains what
happened, and why?
Q10: fri 11.29, Should the court have allowed the confession to
stand? wrt Nelson Hart
research work:
anderson -- 2 dspaced pages plus mixed
refspage; interesting case, and it is no surprise that it involves a
racial element; developing the race angle more would strengthen the
analysis, and subtitles would help organize the themes more;
overall, good beginning. B-14
morin -- 2 pages dspaced, and
several references; several cognitive biases are discussed, eg.
confirmation bias, and how they affected the case; this introduces
an important psychological angle on the case; try using subtitles to
organize the discussion of biases more. Good beginning. B-14 project:
7 dspaced page with subtitles, titlepage, and refspage, no pictures;
the analysis is fairly short, and could include more detail on the
court trials, or it could have some mention of the role of the
media, or given that this is essentially a story, perhaps that angle
could be played up, eg. this is a hero story, which could be
explored and explained more; overall, good case, could use more
development. C19
philleon -- 4 dspaced pages with
subtitles, plus refspage; there is a lot of detail here on the case
and where it went wrong; the literature on false confessions is
especially important; good organization and discussion of themes;
including some photos would add a visual dimension; good beginning
on an interesting case. B15 project: 12 slides including
titlepage and refspage; slides simply designed with some text and an
image; text is in the notes, and it discusses the facts of the case,
the cognitive biases present, and the possibility of a mr big sting
(which is doubtful); the most egregious piece of evidence, his
presence in trenton, was not disclosed to the defense; so there are
legal errors and psychological mistakes; overall, good review of the
case, including some media coverage might develop the analysis more.
good work. B22.5
memphis3 -- 2 sspaced text, plus titlepage,
and some refs (none academic); it sounds like marginality was the
reason behind the tunnel vision, in that it was easier to scapegoat
the boys than find the true killer; developing that theme more would
strengthen the analysis; overall, good beginning. B15
avery -- 3 dspaced pages plus titlepage
and 3 mixed refs; various aspects of the case are discussed, all of
which have a part to play in this case; using subtitles will help
organize those themes more; overall, excellent beginning. A-16 project:
2 people, new proposal; 14 slides, including titlepage, 2 refspages,
a mix of images and text on the slides -- quite often too much,
should be simplified more -- and the essay text is in the notes;
overall, this is a very comprehensive look at the case and what was
involved; the recommendations for reform is especially useful;
overall, excellent work, should simplify slides, or stretch out
material over, say, 20 slides. A-24
junkscience -- 4 sspaced pages
including titlepage, extensive refs page, subtitles, and photos;
excellent discussion of cases, all of which featured hair comparison
analysis, now considered highly unreliable; overall, excellent work,
and presented well. A17 project: 18 slides including
frontpage, refspage; there are a handful of cases based on junk
forensic science, and the slides are designed with a focus on the
image; the descriptions of the cases are succinct, and the summaries
of how forensic science went wrong are good; overall, excellent
work. A+27
truscott -- 5 dspaced pages including
titlepage, subtitles, and refspage; good discussion of the cognitive
biases relevant to this case, and how they got in the way of finding
the true killer; there is some evidence of a soldier from the nearby
base who was luring children, and that maybe the police knew about
it... overall, excellent work. A-16 project: 15 slides
including titlepage and refspage; the slides are a combination of
picture and text, but there is too much text; the main text is in
the notes, so the slides could be simplified more; good on biases,
and problems with the evidence; overall, this shows a lot of work
and is an excellent overview of the case, and the slides could be
simplified more for easier presentation and reading. A-25
eyewitness -- 2.5 dspaced pages plus
refspage; this shows a good understanding of the issues, and more
development of those issues which effect reliability would develop
the analysis more; subtitles would also strengthen the themes as
well; good cases, perhaps some photos would be interesting; good
beginning. B15 project: 17 slides with subtitles, titlepage,
refspage, text in the notes; there are a lot of issues here which
have been shown to effect the ability of eyewitnesses to recount
what happened, such as the cross-race effect; anchoring these issues
then in cases was a good idea, eg. Haanameyer; overall, excellent
work. A26
darrylhunt -- 3 dspaced pages plus
titlepage and refspage; there are some important issues here, eg.
the impact on public consciousness, which could be demonstrated
perhaps by media excerpts; and stylistically, subtitles would help
organize the themes more; overall, well written. B15 project:
11 dspaced pages including titlepage, 2 refspages, no subtitles or
images; this case is very interesting, and certainly illustrates
some important issues, such as cross-racial identification errors,
and the higher rate of prosecutions for black individuals; using
subtitles to organize the issues would make for greater impact and
portrayal of themes; overall, good topic, could be organized more.
B+23
stinney -- 2 sspaced pages with
subtitles, pictures, and 3 (popular) refs, needs some academic refs
too; there are a lot of important issues here, such as racial bias
and 'rush to trial'; the media angle might be difficult to find
articles, but it certainly would be important too; overall,
ambitious, and well organized. A17 project: 17 slides
including titlepage and refspage; slides have images, and sometimes
too much text; the essay component is in the notes; this type of
case would not have been atypical at the time, and is part of a
history of racism and apartheid; overall, excellent work. A26
women -- 2 sspaced pages with subtitles,
and a refspage with multiple academic sources; this is a novel
topic, and there are not that many women wrongfuls (except perhaps
in Ontario), and some are quite famous (like Lindy Chamberlain); the
bias against 'bad moms' is a good interpretive approach; excellent
topic. A17 project: 12 dspaced pages including 2 refspages,
subtitles, no titlepage or pictures; this is quite good as an
overall assessment of what happened, and the specific features of
several individual cases; what would make it more pointed,
analytically, would be including the psychological reason for his
actions: noble cause bias; overall, good work, could be strengthened
with more discussion of cognitive biases, and by including images.
A-24
stephentruscott -- a group of
five; 3 sspaced pages with subtitles, and a refspage of media
sources; each section is clearly authored, but for the project just
show it as group written; there is lots of detail on the case, and
it is summarized well; using media excerpts will better support the
analysis, and photos could be used to illustrate it; one detail that
comes up in cbc coverage is that there was a known sex offender at
the nearby airbase; overall, good work. A-16 project: 5
authors; 16 slides, including titlepage and refspage; text in notes
not enough for an essay, especially with 5 people; the discussion of
police evidence and cognitive biases is good, and could be developed
more; the design of the slides is good, and there are other
materials which could be used to enhance them, eg. media coverage
which is available on the case; overall, good topic, good work,
could be developed more, for five people. B-
romeophilleon -- two people; 3
sspaced pages with subtitles, and webrefs page; well-written, and
covers all the issues, but also leaves some questions, such as
should the police have investigated the possibility of a false
confession?; media coverage of his release might be interesting to
look at; overall, excellent beginning. A-16 project: 16
slides, including title, no refspage, historical documents and
photos are good; the defense case looked good, but what went
wrong?; excellent on media coverage; overall, excellent work on
describing and presenting the case, substantively and stylistically.
A-25
wrongfuls -- 1.5 sspaced pages, with
subtitles, graph, and 2 references; a good overview of some of the
issues; more detail on the work of the Innocence project, for
example, would add some history and depth to the analysis, given the
difficulty of examining all of these factors; overall, good
beginning. B15 project: 8 dspaced pages with pictures,
chart, refspage, no titlepage; several cases are considered with
regard to problems in forensics, etc; overall, good summary of some
of the issues, and using subtitles might be a way to develop certain
sections. B22.5
mccollumbrown -- 2 sspaced pages
with subtitles and a web-refspage; rather than being the most
notorious of cases, this bears the signs of so many cases, marginal
suspects, coerced confessions, tunnel vision, racism, and so on;
does the media coverage at exoneration get at any of that? overall,
some questions, good beginning. B-14 project: 13 slides with
pictures, too much text on slides, titlepage, 2 refs pages, no essay
in the notes; the analysis is very descriptive of the case, and more
analysis of the issue of police questioning, for example, would add
more substance to the discussion. overall, good case, should put an
essay in the notes, redesign the slides, and could use more theory.
B- 21/30
cjohnson -- 2 dspaced pages with
subtitles, 2 webrefs; this is one of only a few NS cases, and
illustrates some interesting features, such as (fabricated) graphic
crime scene evidence; more on when and how the investigation went
wrong, and how that was overturned, would add to the analysis; good
beginning. B-14 project: 13 slides including titlepage and
refspage; the facts of the case are outlined, such as the timeline,
problems with the investigation, etc.; stylistically the slides
could be cleaned up to make for a cleaner presentation;
substantively, perhaps a video, or news items could be added to show
how this case 'travelled' beyond shelburne; as well, the text is not
divided up equally in the notes section; overall, good work, could
be developed more. B22.5
darrylhunt2 -- such a typical
case, eyewitnesses who were wrong, racism in a small place, tunnel
vision perhaps; developing the cognitive and fault-based issues more
would strengthen the analysis, and subtitles would help develop
themes more; overall, good topic, could be developed more. C13 project:
it is now about the experiences of older individuals in federal
custody; 12 dspaced pages, including titlepage and refspage,
pictures and subtitles; good introduction, statistics on elderly
proportion in prison, programming, diseases, etc; overall, this is
more of a 'corrections' paper, or even general criminology, and
needs to be turned to a wrongful focus...how about, one of the
consequences of being wrongfully convicted is... and this would have
affected such long term exonerees as ... more to be added.. add:
new preface and conclusions, could reference some cases, especially
long-term ones, and relate them to the material. B+23
stevenavery -- 3 sspaced pages with
titlepage, picture, subtitles, and mixedrefs; such a typical case:
marginal suspect, suspect evidence, police suspicion and tunnel
vision, inadequate witness... ; more on how the reform group worked
to resolve such issues in the future would be interesting to
develop; overall, good beginning. B-14 project: 12 slides
with images and too much text, could be simplified more; there is no
text in the notes which makes for crowded slides and a short essay;
the legal aspects of the case are explained well but the analysis is
too short; ore explicit analysis of the media's role in the case
would be interesting. overall, good case and good analysis, and it
could be expanded more both stylistically and substantively. B22.5
gypsyrose -- 2.5 dspaced pages with
subtitles, and one movie ref; this is a very interesting case, and
certainly puts her in the position of being abused, and kept virtual
hostage by her mother; could a defense of self-defence be argued? --
developing that angle more explicitly would strengthen the analysis,
as well as media coverage. C13 redo: 11.19, there is more detail on
the psychological abuse, and the way the medical system was
manipulated; she would have been kept 'hostage', and under a lot of
distress; the media coverage angle will be interesting to include in
the final project. overall, much better. B15 project: 12
slides including titlepage and refspage (none academic); slides
fairly simple with images and minimal text for the most part; the
text is in the notes, but it doesn't look equivalent to an essay;
the psychological angle is interesting, and so is that of the media
-- in essence perhaps mental incompetence could have been a much
stronger defense in her case -- developing that angle more would
strengthen the analysis. overall, interesting case. B-21
briananderson -- 2.5 sspaced
pages with subtitles, photo, and 2 webrefs; an old case, and an
otherwise cold case; it is amazing that it came back for review at
all, and it would be interesting to look at media coverage and see
whether it names racism as a factor; talking about racism and
wrongfuls would also add; good beginning. B15 project: there
are 12 slides including titlepage and refspage; the slides go
through the case outling the lack of evidence, etc., but also how
racism played a role; interesting case, because while there might
have been mistakes, eg. not calling the alibi, there was also what
appears to have been deliberate misconduct by the police to trap and
convict them; overall, this is a good presentation of the case,
which would also benefit from looking at media coverage at the time
to see if there was a 'rush to justice'; good work. B 22.5
charlessmith -- 3 sspaced pages
with subtitles, pictures, and mediarefs; good review of a couple of
cases; more on why smith did what he did, and how he did it would
strengthen the analysis, eg. why did he provide info to prosecute so
many moms?; overall, this shows a lot of work, need more on the
psychology of smith. A-16 project: 15 slides including
titlepage, refspage, video, and text in notes; such a great quote
"injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"; good
discussion of the issues and some cases, could have more description
of what the video is, and as well, the discussion of tunnel vision
and confirmation bias could also include 'noble cause bias'; a bit
on the role of the media in this would also add to the analysis;
overall, excellent work, could have some more detail in places. A-25
cogbiases -- 5 sspaced pages in point
form, with web mediarefs; this is a very detailed recantation of
four cases, but there is very little about cognitive biases,
highlighting those more would add to the analysis; overall, good
start with case descriptions. B-14 project: of the three
cases, morin, milgaard, and marshall, only the last was indigenous,
but that is not a big part of the analysis, rather the idea is that
the police laboured under tunnel vision, which reflected their
partiality in the case; more on cognitive biases in general, and
maybe focusing in more detail on fewer cases would strengthen the
analysis. overall, good work, should develop the psychological angle
more. B22.5
marcellus -- 3 dspaced pages with
subtitles, and a media refspage; the 'research' and 'outcomes'
sections seem more like something the government would do, and not
proposed here, same as with the conclusion; the proposed scope of
the research needs to be narrowed down more; C13 redo: the case
makes for a good topic. B15 project: 13 slides including
titlepage, refspage, and thank you; the slides are designed well,
although a couple have too much text; the text is in the notes,
although it does not look long enough for an essay; this is a very
interesting case, and one of many such death row cases;, and leads
to the question of whether Missouri has a lot of such cases;
overall, good work, this is an important issue. B22.5
brian -- 4 dspaced text ages, plus
titlepage, subtitles, and media refspage; this case should be
notorious for the racism it displays; this is a good overview, and
more on the role of the media would deepen the analysis; overall,
good beginning. B15 project: 13 dspaced pages with
titlepage, refspage, subtitles, and no pictures; a good discussion
of the legal detail of the case, and a good argument that systemic
racism played a role; more on the role of the media, with some
pictures would strengthen and add to the analysis. B+23
tammybouvette -- 4 dspaced pages
including titlepage, and (mostly media) refspage; the case
description is fairly general, and it should have a summary of what
the circumstances of the case were; however, the writing is clear,
and the issues are explained well; overall, good beginning, should
describe the case more. C13 reread: good application of the
concepts, could have more refs. B-14 project: the topic is
now 'interrogation tactics'; overall, an excellent overview of the
issues, could expand the text in the notes more. B+23
sophonow -- 2 people; 2.5 sspaced
pages text with subtitles, general refspage, and titlepage; the case
is described well, and the various problems are pointed out; what
sort of safeguards could have prevented this miscarriage happening
again?; overall, good beginning, needs more analysis, especially for
two people. B- 14 project: 23 slides including titlepage,
table of contents, bibliography, and thank you; all of the text
appears to be on the slides, which makes for a crowded presentation
and a short essay; the analysis covers most of the main points of
the case, and could get into more detail in places, for example
about the photos used to identify the defendant; overall, good work,
needs to develop the essay component more, especially for two
people. B-21
baltovich -- 2 pages dspaced with
subtitles, plus titlepage, and refs page with 2 refs; a basic
description of the case, and what went wrong; including media
coverage of the case would be interesting, especially since it seems
to be implicated in the faulty testimony; what was the reason for
the eventual exoneration? overall, good beginning. C13 project:
10 dspaced pages including titlepage, refspage, and subtitles, no
pictures; the discussion of the case is good, especially the legal
angles and their impact on the eventual exoneration; stylistically
could use some photos, but overall this is a good presentation of
the case. B+23
mccullough -- 2 people; 2 sspaced,
with subtitles, titlepage, and 4 webrefs; the case is interesting,
and it seems that a major factor is the role of the police, which
raises the question of what sort of safeguards would prevent such
'mistakes' happening?; good beginning and parallels to other cases.
B15 project: 2 people, 13 slides including titlepage and
refspage, could have more academic references;
stylistically, there is too much text on the slides, and could be
simplified; it is interesting how features of the case are shown to
be present in other known wrongful conviction too; overall, good
work. B+23
gregparsons -- 2 sspaced pages with
subtitles, plus titlepage and 2 refs; good detail on the case, and
the police mistakes appear to have been systematic and biased; more
on whether those mistakes were fault-based or cognitive-based would
add to the analysis; overall, good beginning, there might even be
media coverage. B+15.5
project: 15 slides including titlepage and refspage, text in
notes, mostly small text on slides with some images; it's
interesting that there are so many cases in such a small place, hich
looks like overall incompetence on the part of the police; overall,
good work, especially in connecting the case to some others, and
more on what went wrong, slide #14, would strengthen the analysis.
B+23
banderson -- 6 dspaced pages with
subtitles, pictures, and several webrefs; the case is described
well, and the writing is good; more on the racial angle, and how
natives are more likely to be wrongfully convicted, etc., will
strengthen the analysis, and show how the issues are more systemic.
good beginning B15 project: 8 dspaced pages with references,
no titlepage, subtitles, some images; the topic seems to have
shifted to 'eyewitnesses', and there s a general discussion of some
of the problems with eyewitnesss; tying the observations to specific
cases would strengthen the analysis, in showing how the abstract
ideas play out in cases. overall, good, could be developed more.B-21
mrbig -- 5 dspaced pages with titlepage,
refspage, and subtitles; the issue is a good one, and this procedure
can certainly lead to wrongful convictions; more detail on how they
work, and when they don't, would add to the analysis; unger is a
good example, are there others? good beginning. B-14 project:
11 dspaced pages with subtitles, titlepage, refspage, no pictures;
the description of the technique and its limitations, the reference
to the Hart case, and the discussion of the Unger case are all good;
more on the legal technicalities, and why some countries have banned
this technique would add more to the analysis. B22.5
confessions -- 2.5 dspaced pages,
with academic references; false confessions, as pointed out, are
related to vulnerability quite often, such as youths, racial
minorities, and the poor; and juries are more likely to convict if
there's a confession even if it is retracted; good beginning, try
using subtitles to organize themes. B-14 project: 15 slides
including titlepage, table of contents, and refspage, and the text
is in the notes, although it might be a bit short for the essay;
some of he factors that lead to false confessions are spelled out
such as police pressure and marginality, however the 3 cases at the
end, the 3M's were not false confessions, but rather false
testimony, similar but different. overall, good, could be reworked.
B-21
rubincarter -- 2 pages with
subtitles and picture, and several references; good description of
the case and all his troubles; more on the psychological trauma of
being falsely accused and convicted would add to the analysis;
overall, good case, good beginning. B15 project: 13
slides including titlepage and 2 refspages; some good images are
used, bt there is often too much text on the slides; the essay
component is in the notes section; what makes this interesting is
that he went on to do advocacy work for others, turning his
misfortune around. B+23
westmemphis3 -- 2 sspaced pages, 2
references; interesting case, and it is described well; using
subtitles might help organize the themes more, and if the media has
a role in sensationalizing the case, perhaps some examples can be
found. good beginning, could have more on the psychological angle.
B-14 project: 13 slides, with titlepage and refspage,
diagrams, transcripts, photos, and news items; the analysis goes
thru the case, the evidence, etc. quite well, especially since it is
supported by the documentary evidence; coming to an overall
conclusion would strengthen the writeup, but overall this is quite
good. B22.5
mullins -- 3 dspaced pages plus several
references; this is a good case, and notorious enough it is the
subject of a cbc episode; using subtitles will help organize the
different stages of the case, and perhaps there is also media
coverage, eg. the Fifth Estate's "Death in the Family" which could
be used; good beginning. B-14 project: 16 slides of images,
and just a caption for text, follows the general stages of the case;
titlepage and refspage are included, with text in the notes; an
interesting item is the copy of the news article, although it can't
be read, and the subtitle "M-J can't be factually innocent" is not
explained; overall, this is a good recounting of the case, and it is
presented well, more on the psychological reasons for his behaviour
would strengthen the analysis; overall, good work. B22.5
williammj -- 2 sspaced pages plus
extensive refspage; this is a good case, and was perhaps one of the
first which D. Smith was involved in; the psychological reasons for
why there was such a single-minded obsession with William could be
developed more; otherwise, good beginning. B-14 project: 8
dspace pages, no titlepage, 3 refspages, subtitles, no pictures; the
facts of the case are straightforward, more on the role of cognitive
biases and interpretations, the media's coverage of the case, and of
course the role of the prosecutor would strengthen the analysis;
using images. pictures, news accounts, and videos would also make
the discussion more of a presentation; overall, good work, could be
developed more. B-21
woodhouse -- 2.5 dspaced pages,
titlepage, and two media references; interesting case, because it's
the Winnipeg police, and they are not using proper procedures;
developing the psychological angle more would help explain their
behaviour, and using subtitles would help organize the themes more;
good case. C13 redo: 11.10. good on how project will be done,
showing some (more) examples of the cognitive bias would help
develop the analysis more, and subtitles would help organize the
essay better. thanks for redoing. B-14 project: 9 dspaced
pages with titlepage, refspage, no subtitles, or images; this covers
the basics, and there could be more about the interrogations, the
substance of their lawsuits, the media coverage of their case, the
cognitive biases involved, etc.; overall, good case, could be
developed more. C+20
raplyrics -- 2 dspaced pages text, no
references; this is a very inventive topic, and could be really
interesting; including some examples, and perhaps referencing some
videos would have added to the proposal, but they can be added to
the project; overall, interesting topic, could organize it by cases,
perhaps. B-14 project: six dspaced pages with subtiles, 2
pages refs, no titlepage, or images; adding in images of the artists
and their performances, quoting some of their lyrics which have
become the 'evidence' against them, and so on, would add more detail
and strength to the analysis; overall, this is very interesting, and
the analysis has some credibility, and could be developed more.
B22.5
racism -- 5 dspaced pages with
subtitles, mixed references; good topic, especially as it is evident
in so many cases in Canada, eg. Woodhouse, Mullins; perhaps there
are recommendations for how to avoid racism in new cases? maybe look
for federal reports referencing racism in wrongfuls?; good
beginning. B15 project: now combined
moreracism -- 2 dspaced pages with
subtitles, academic references; the issue of racism is an important
one in criminal justice and wrongful convictions; probably just
focusing on floyd would be enough, and it certainly was part of a
much bigger protest against police racism; overall, good beginning.
B-14 project: now combined... 13 slides including titlepage
and 2 refspages; the essay is in the notes, but there is too much
text on the slides which could be simplified; there is a lot of
detail, building a conceptual case that racism is a significant
factor in wrongful convictions; overall, this is substantively
excellent, and more work could be done to improve the stylistic part
of it. B+23
guypaul -- 5pages dspaced including
subtitles, titlepage, and refspage; the issue of junk science runs
throughout the case, and underlies a lot of the mistakes the police
and prosecution made, especially since they wanted to believe they
had a case, so there's a cognitive bias there too...; overall, good
case, good treatment. B+15.5 project: 13 slides including
titlepage and 2 refspages; essay is in the notes, and the slides are
well designed; the analysis uses a combination of junk science and
cognitive biases to make the case succinctly and persuasively;
overall, excellent work. A-
kyleunger -- 5 dspaced pages
including titlepage, pictures, and mixed refs; this shows a lot of
review already, and major points of the case are mentioned; the mr
big sting is especially egregious, because there is such an
incentive to lie and admit to crimes not actually committed;
excellent beginning. A17 project: 25 slides, including
titlepage and refspage; all of the text is on the slides and none in
the notes, making for a crowded presentation with too much text to
easily read; the analysis is good, and explained well; stylistically
the slides cold be better designed for readability. A-24
amandaknox -- 2 sspaced pages with
subtitles, pictures, and 3 references; the influence of the media in
this case is important, from how it framed the issues to how it
created the appearance of guilt and led to a rush to justice; making
the documentary the focus of attention is a good idea; excellent
beginning. A17 project: 18 slides, with the text in
the notes, and the video is the one reference; the documentary is
treated as a source of facts, so more discussion of how the case was
'topicalized' would add a more critical edge to the analysis;
overall, excellent review, could use more references, and a slight
twist on the analysis. A-24
georgeallen -- 4 pages dspaced
including subtitles, two references; cases like this seem so common,
a likely suspect, a coerced confession, poor evidence which is later
overturned, it sounds like a soap opera; perhaps there are pictures
or news items which can be added in for interest?; overall, good,
could have more detail C13 new topic: menendez. 10.30 3
dspaced pages with subtitles, mixed references page; this is a good
case because it is so current; since the media helps construct the
case for the public, perhaps media examples can be used? B15 project:
17 slides, all pictures, no text except for the refspage;
interesting case, and subtitles would help organize it more
thematically for the reader; there also should be more analysis of
how the case went wrong and why. overall, interesting and
informative, could use more of an academic angle as well. B+23
interrogation -- 6 dspaced pages
including titlepage, 2 pages text with subtitles, 2 pages
references!, and a blank page; excellent proposal, well written, and
focused; keeping it case-based, but also examining the issues by
themselves will work well; could use some pictures, excellent
beginning A17 project: 26 slides including titlepage and
refspage; there is a lot of information on the slides, eg #6, which
makes for difficult reading, perhaps they could be simplified; most
of the slides have text in the notes, but not in some cases, eg #10,
where it says Reid was used with Morin; overall, the content is
good, but the style should be simplified. A-24
clarencewood -- 2.5 dspaced pages,
several references; looking at court documents and media reports is
ambitious, but would certainly fill in the full picture; adding a
few here would show what they look like; overall, a thought out
project, could use more detail. B-14 project: now it is
Wilbert Coffin; 11 slides including titlepage, refspage, pictures
and minimal text on slides, and no text in the notes; retry: the
text in the notes looks too short for the essay component; overall,
interesting case, could be developed more, eg. media coverage, etc.
C+20
moreeyewitness -- 2sspaced
pages, webreferences, subtitles; an interesting case, and there is
lots of detail; perhaps there is some media coverage which could be
added; overall, good beginning. B15 project: 6 dspaced pages
including titepage, refspage, and 4 pages text; the discussion is a
temporal description of the case, with little mention on memory,
eyewitness identification, tunnel vision, etc., which would improve
the analysis; overall, the text could be developed more, but the
powerpoint had a lot of good images from the case. B-21
menendez -- 2 dspaced pages, varied
references; this is a good, contemporary case to examine, especially
given the amount of media coverage; to see them as victims means
they should have had a plausible self-defense; perhaps the role of
the media is important in this injustice. B15
