project work:

climatechange -- proposal: 2 pages with references; discusses the basic elements of climate change, and its consequences; this is probably the most immediate and tangible threat to society and the environment; it is very well written, and could use subtitles to organize the themes, and of course some pictures; overall, excellent work, important topic. A- 8/10

racismanxiety -- proposal: double submission; titlepage, 2 pages text, and references; looking at the anxiety caused due to racialized discrimination is a good topic, and it needs to be explicitly linked to the concept of ethnography, and perhaps to crisis, if it is to serve as an apocalypse topic -- as in, for example, seeing covid19 as a moment of precaria... overall, needs to more explicitly link to the courses. B- 7/10

abughraib -- proposal: double submission; 2 pages with subtitles, pictures, and references; this is an excellent combination of ethnographic analysis using public documents and the concepts of anomie and surveillance, to demonstrate how a visual analysis can have the power of apocalyptic revelation; overall, well organized, well written, and an excellent formulation of the project. A+ 9/10

fire -- proposal: 2 people; four pages including titlepage, subtitles, and references; beautiful title, and wonderfully written, eg. 'repetition transforms emergency into atmosphere'; the use of the concepts of habituation, witnessing, and normalization is good; overall, the conceptual themes are cogent and substantial, while stylistically a few pictures would help; excellent work. A 8.5/10

internmentcamps -- proposal: 4 pages with subtitles, pictures, and references; a comparison of japanese and immigration camps; there are some interesting ideas, eg. 'hysteria is an element of precaria'... this makes the apocalyptic moment tangible and threatening; overall, this is a wonderful theme, it is excellently written, and is broad enough in scope to be powerful in its conclusions. A+ 9/10

climateawareness -- proposal: 3 pages with subtitles, plus web-references; this discusses climate change fairly generally, and the use of suzuki and pelltier is good -- perhaps their autobiographies can be seen as 'oracles of the endtimes'; some reference to precarity would help develop the analysis more, and some pictures would add to it stylistically; overall, good work, could be strengthened. B 7.5/10

covidpandemic -- proposal: 4 pages including titlepage, and web-refspage; the concept of apocalyptic governance is good, and is aptly applied to the covid shutdown (it might apply also to other epidemics, such as swine flu, bird flu, and of course AIDS); thematically, subtitles would help organize themes, and some pictures would enhance it stylistically; overall, excellent beginning. A- 8/10

greatdepression -- proposal: double submission, 2 pages with subtitles and pictures, and a refspage; generally, looking at how precarity influences survival behaviour and social control is good, and linking it to the great depression using concepts of strain and ethno-history strengthens the analysis; overall, excellent themes, and well-written, with good use of archival materials. A+ 9/10
