research projects:
greatdepression -- proposal: double
submission, 2 pages with subtitles and pictures, and a refspage;
generally, looking at how precarity influences survival behaviour
and social control is good, and linking it to the great depression
using concepts of strain and ethno-history strengthens the analysis;
overall, excellent themes, and well-written, with good use of
archival materials. A+ 9/10
racismanxiety -- proposal: double
submission; titlepage, 2 pages text, and references; looking at the
anxiety caused due to racialized discrimination is a good topic, and
it needs to be explicitly linked to the concept of ethnography, and
perhaps to crisis, if it is to serve as an apocalypse topic -- as
in, for example, seeing covid19 as a moment of precaria... overall,
needs to more explicitly link to the courses. B- 7/10
abughraib -- proposal: double submission; 2
pages with subtitles, pictures, and references; this is an excellent
combination of ethnographic analysis using public documents and the
concepts of anomie and surveillance, to demonstrate how a visual
analysis can have the power of apocalyptic revelation; overall, well
organized, well written, and an excellent formulation of the
project. A+ 9/10
homelessness -- proposal: 2 pages text
plus 2 refs; the idea is good, that survival behaviours are
criminalized; looking at the structural lack of resources, and the
structural response to people living with those limitations is good
... it's almost like an 'ethnography of place'... overall, excellent
premise and well written, could use subtitles to organize themes and
issues more. A- 8
sexworkstigma -- proposal: 2 people, 3
pages text plus 3 references; there is a lot of detail here, and
using subtitles would help organize the themes more, eg. clients,
policing, reasons for choosing that 'lifestyle' and so on; photos
would also enhance the stylistic aspect of the project as wel, and
who this person is should be explained; overall, good beginning,
could be organized more thematically. B 7.5
burningcouches -- proposal: 4 pages
including titlepage, subtitles, and refspage; this is a nice way to
put it: "the event as a cultural phenomenon embedded in student
identity"; the project is quite ambitious, in that it suggests
observation and interviews 'at the end of term' -- it might be
better to use the news reports as resources to construct the
'event'; overall, good topic, could be reformulated. B- 7
sexworkstories -- proposal: 4 pages including
titlepage, footnotes, and refs; this is quite comprehensive, with
excellent sources, and a planned interview; adding subtitles would
help organize themes more in the text, and adding photos (and
poems?) would add more stylistic detail; overall, this is sensitive
and ambitious, excellent beginning. A 8.5
dragqueens -- proposal: 4 people, 4 pages
with subtitles, pictures, refs; the project is quite ambitious, with
plans to interview people? -- how will they be selected, through
personal contacts, snowball sampling, etc?; it is possible to
construct a story using found resources, such as social media posts,
demonstration photos, etc; overall, good topic, excellent
background, needs more discussion of method. A- 8
homelessincanada -- wouldn't open
initially; 4 pages including titlepage, 2 pages text, and refspage;
this is (mostly) a reflection on the personal wish to learn about
the topic, which could be a methods topic, but should also reflect
on what that might mean, consulting sources, finding subjects, etc;
overall, needs information, eg. NB material, eg. moncton
