Denominational
- based on religious criteria - Catholic or Protestant
Dissentient - that which is in opposition to the majority or
official status
Governor General in Council - The Queen's representative and
the cabinet
Upper Canada - Ontario
Lower Canada - Quebec
N.B.R. - abbreviation for New Brunswick Reports, a written
compilation of all court cases that have been decided in New
Brunswick courts. [Note: Each province has a similar set of
reports]
S. C. C. - abbreviation for the Supreme Court of Canada
Complainant - the person who initiates a court case
against someone
Respondent - the person who responds to the complainant (aka
the defendant)
Appellant - a person who appeals a lower court ruling
because they lost
Applicant - a
person who applies for or requests something
Intervenor - a third party who becomes involved in a court
case to protect their own interests
Board of Inquiry - a legal hearing usually overseen by a
Human Rights Board or a Student Placement Board
New Brunswick Court of Queen's Bench - lower level court in
New Brunswick
New Brunswick Court of Appeals - second level court in New
Brunswick [NOTE: This pattern is not always true in every
province]
Miller J. - manner in which the presiding trial official is
identified [Judge Miller]
"The application was allowed" - the argument that the
applicant (complainant) made was accepted by the judge.
Ruling - a statement of the judge(s) decision on a case
abrogate - repeal, cancel, annul
derogate - detract, go astray, lessen
dissentient - disagreeing with the official majority
in loco parentis - in the place of the parent
