Luc Walhain is Associate Professor and the current Chair of the History Department at St. Thomas University. His Korean ancestry fails to explain why he has lived, studied and worked in Europe, East Asia and North America. He has undergraduate and graduate degrees in translation, Korean Studies and History. His PhD research looked at the central role played by university students in the overthrow of the Korean military dictatorship in the 1980s, as they successfully re-appropriated and redefined the concept of democracy. His study and life experience in South Korea have familiarised him with the socio-economic ramifications of imperialism. Indeed, his main ongoing research project examines the massive blackmarketeering of U.S. Army goods in South Korea since 1945.
