Faith and Mr. Brown

"Young Goodman Brown"We have what may be the best set of questions about this story I've ever seen, on the Ceilidh forum. We'll use these as a basis for deciding what we all think about Mr Brown, his wife, the folks in Salem, and Mr. Hawthorne.

Shakespeare warning

The Tempest opens next Wednesday. It seems to me the most useful thing we could do immediately is to get the events and motivations straight. Here's an idea for doing that, suggested by the fact that Shakespeare's acting company was about the size of Truth in Society this term.

I'll circulate a list of characters, or sets of characters. Your job is to reread the play, focusing on your character, and to be ready, in class next time, to summarize what your character does and says in each of the scenes in which she appears. We'll begin going through the play, scene by scene, on Thursday. If you have questions about your character, what her lines mean or what she's doing, post them on the Ceilidh 1006T forum before we meet. (If you don't have any, I'll assume you haven't thought mu ch about it: this isn't easy going.) Read the questions as they come up and respond to any you have anything to say about.
