The Page and the Stage
Prompt #5
January 11, 2008

sorting, selecting, and answering some questions

Sorting the questions

There are now eleven sets of questions about specific passages or ideas or references in The Hostage on line (there is a link to them on the main course page). For class Wednesday morning, here's what you should do:

Create a list of at least a dozen questions which you think could be answered (or at least answered sufficiently) by looking at the context in which the reference occurs, and offer a suggested answer.  For example, "what is a brockel?" It's fairly clear from the context that it's a slang or maybe Irish term for a brothel.

Create another list of at least twenty questions that you think could be answered in a phrase, by looking up the answer on line, in a dictionary or other reference work -- and that you think answering would actually help you understand something.

Answer as many of those questions as you can in an hour or so, and put the answers in your list.

Make a list of a dozen questions which you think it might be worth talking about, but which can't be answered by consulting a reference work.

Bring all three lists to class Wednesday morning.
