quotable remarks about The Hostage;
beginning on The Rover

the quotes

I've printed out -- this time reformatted, and including names -- the quotation files on The Hostage that were available, so that we can take a few minutes to discuss whatever seems worth discussing. I'll also have some things to say about posting things on the Web and the Forum, and why they have different requirements.

schedule

I'll have copies of the texts of the first five of the ten one-act plays being put together by the seminar in production, for those who weren't here last time. As I said then, your required reading for the rest of the term will include those plays and The Rover, and that you will need to attend the productions of both (the one-acters only run two nights, April 18 and 19, so you need to make firm plans; The Rover runs April 2-5, which makes it easier).

We're going to be doing research on all of these plays. All of us will work on The Rover, and we'll create some overlapping groups to work on the one-acters. For each, we'll produce a Playgoer's Guide. The one on The Rover will be more ambitious; the one-acters will be less so.

I've extended the deadline for reading (and posting on) The Rover ; it's now this weekend (i.e, before Easter). We'll be beginning to assemble research reports on the play next week; you should, as you read, be thinking about things it would be useful to find out about -- as we did with The Hostage.

After the Easter weekend, we'll have about ten days to do our research on The Rover and assemble it into a guide. Because we don't meet Friday, I'm going to use a slightly different technique to get us started: everybody will get, randomly, a slip with a question on it.  Between now and next Tuesday night, you should spend a couple of hours, at least, finding out what you can about your question. You should keep a detailed record of how you went about it -- where you looked, what you found, exactly what resources you consulted -- and, finally, prepare a report which explains your process, and tells us what you learned about the question. Assemble this into a file called research1.htm (that's a one, not an ell) and save it in your engl2223 folder before 8:30 next Wednesday morning.

One-act plays

The deadlines for reading and posting on the ten one-acters are available on the Prompts page on the Web site; the Forums for the first five will be accessible later today.
