Prompt #16
March 2, 2011
thoughts on companions, reflecting on performances

Forum discussions

As of this morning, we're past the deadline to post reflections on attending the performances of the three plays that ran last week. You can post responses to the reflections of others through Friday night.

Looking back at the Companions

Below are the transcribed comments groups made on comparing the three Playgoer's Companions with their sources in the individual wikis. We'll discuss them, and any other issues that seem useful.

Comments on Inspector Hound Companion
  • We noticed that there was no quote on the front page. Just curious as to why that wasn't included?
  • The director of the first production is not mentioned, though it's understandable why that is -- no reason mentioning it when the current production is under a different director.
  • A different quote was used in the printed version. Was it better than our choices? Why?
  • And our fun fact was removed and replaced with the awards Tom Stoppard had been given. Probably a good change, but putting both maybe?
Comments on Heart's Desire Companion
  • The flow of information about the author had been changed by rearranging some of the sentences and words.
  • All the blue kettle was omitted, because it might confuse people. However [it] may have been useful to mention it so people who wanted to find further information could do it.
  • Pictures hard to find but definitely noticed their absence. Maybe a kitchen scene pictures would have been helpful.
  • Typo's "realise" on front cover quote.
  • Everything is easier to read and flows better in comparison to the wiki
  • quotes were well placed
  • Script on front is interesting, lets reader know what was going to happen
  • More specific in Author's bio relates to specific plays and publications so maybe people can relate to them.
Comments on Perfect Pie Companion
  • Addition of quotes not in wiki draft -- why were they more important, or important enough to be considered?
  • Why was Thompson's personal connection" expanded upon from original wiki draft?
  • The picture on the bottom of second page, under "About the Play" (of the actors) -- we don't like it because it is setting expectations of what the audience will see, when the director might set it differently.

Raising whatever questions or issues seem relevant

We'll take some time to go around and invite everyone to raise any issue, ask any question, or reflect on any part of what's been going on -- about performances, plays, postings, Companions, whatever. Or, of course, pass.

More play scripts

Scripts for David Hare's Fanshen have been available for signout outside  my office since last week; as of yesterday afternoon there are also scripts for Neil LaBute's Autobahn.
