This course examines the importance of assessment practices and their role, combined with curriculum and instruction, in the improvement of student learning. Topics will include: diagnostic assessment, assessment for learning, assessment of learning and assessment as learning, norm and criterion referenced assessment and standardized testing. Students will be introduced to the process of planning and creating valid and reliable assessment instruments.
The general principles of paper and pencil testing covered will focus on the effective construction of assessment items using a) selected responses (multiple choice, true-false, matching), b) supplied responses (fill in the blank, completion), c) restricted response performances and/or products (paragraph writing, materials selection for a task, measuring a natural phenomenon, locating information), and d) extended response performances and/or products (writing a short story, conducting an experiment, predicting a natural phenomenon, solving a complex issue). The final topic examines effective grading and reporting practices.
